Hopkins was green and easily outboxed. Toney was a better win given once again the stage of their careers. Tarver is a very good fighter and his win over Jones was huge. But it wasn’t a prime Roy.
Bud, you’re bringing in a special type of stoopid with this post…how in the hell can you say Jones was in the same form he was vs Woods when Jones / Tarver had only gone one round? Maybe what you meant is that based on round 1 Jones appeared to be in good form and you’re extrapolating from there. Just prior to Roy getting ethered Manny Steward even says, “It looks like Jones is still having trouble with Tarver.”
Just because he was top 2 doesn't mean he was in his prime. We see this in stubborn holdovers from previous eras. Floyd, himself, wasn't in his prime when he beat Pacquiao, yet he was pound-for-pound number one.
Your not going to be on your prime at 35 years of age or even 32 years of age. Your just not. Never seen an older person say his prime was when he was in his mid thirties. Its like Hopkins bragging he beat Jones. WOW. You beat up a half dead Jones. Or what about Pat Lawlor who beat DURAN and BENITEZ? Are those wins credible? Anyone that's ever been in combat sports knows its BS to sit there and say someone was close to his prime at 35 after all those years of boxing, sparring, etc. Its just nonsense.
The difference is I have followed his career closely at the time. You guys just mostly rely on boxrec. Rochigiani knocked him down before. Dariusz was all over the place in that fight, and shwoed a vulnerable chin. In the Tiozzo, Dariusz was past prime, but it is the same chin he had when he was in his prime. Yes he was wobbled, even by guys who were not known as big punchers, but he had tremendous will, conditioning and improved defense under Sdunek to compensate. I say he had an average chin. Certainly no granit chin. Granit chin that is guys like Mc Call, Toney, Mercer etc
Sweet Jesus, you're a pathetic fanboy. That's correct about Steward. It's because Jones was fighting the second best opponent of his career. In the four of five minutes that exist of that fight, Jones looks very good until he gets laid out.
Yeah right. You’d pick Ruiz and a washed up Hill to beat Tarver? Cement feet Toney never posed the issues that Tarver did. Please go on and on.
Stop it!! No way on God's Green Earth was Roy prime for that fight. What's worse, watching 5 minutes, or only having 5 minutes of footage, could in no way determine if someone was or wasn't still prime. You can't actually believe this.
I didn’t say he was prime. Same form as Woods and that Pacific Island scrub he beat, which was top two in the world.
Antonio Tarver beat a past prime and rapidly declining Roy Jones. Was it still a good win ? Yes as Roy was still highly ranked and formidable. But this was in no way the Roy Jones of the 90’s
