Agreed. Obviously speaking relatively compared to guys on a boxing forum, but a fair few of those journeymen type HWs are just pretty tough naturally big men. I know he's older now and off his PEDs, but even people like Lucas Browne (who've previously won titles) look pretty dreadful. Obviously it goes without saying that this is all relative compared to the likes of us on here, but it's a fair observation.
Of course. Look at Lucas Browne - he was technically a world champion though the WBA belt he had holds little weight, but he got battered off a rugby player who was in shape. Certainly heavyweight lends itself to boxers who aren’t particularly technical but have amazing physical attributes that outweigh their opponents. Look at Joe Joyce - technically he is nowhere near as good as Takam - his punches look awkward and his defence is minimal. However, he has tremendous fitness, an amazing chin and relatively good power which means he is able to plow forward until he wins. George Foreman wasn’t a great technical boxer but his attributes carried him to the very top level. The true elite heavyweights are those with solid attributes but good technical ability - Ali, Holmes and Lewis immediately spring to mind.
Although the heavyweight division is my favourite, I can't help but find the vast majority of heavyweights unimpressive - for blokes whose full-time job is to box, some of them are absolutely awful. There's a sociological investigation to be had in there somewhere regarding the heavyweights, in particular. I feel like a lot of these guys are not athletes in the typical sense and especially juxtaposed with other boxers, who I think are incredible athletes. It seems like a lot of them simply fell into boxing one way or another. Big baldy will still be enjoying pharma, even if he's just microdosing or on a TRT dose. I just find it remarkable that there are blokes who hold down full-time jobs in offices, or wherever else, that are fitter (holistically) than the majority of these puddings. Look at David Adeleye. He's tall, and looks the part. He's not very skillful, and he looks 250lbs despite being only around 220lbs. The guy's a cruiser, and how long would it take him to do a basic 5k or 10k with that abysmal stamina? The aerobic component of boxing is not akin to a 5k, I know that, but you get my point. He's basically where he is because of his appearance. He makes Fabio Wardley look like Muhammad Ali. There are middleweights who are very skillful and are fantastic athletes but are nowhere near being hyped up and on TV on a regular basis. A bit of a random assortment, this post, but it's an interesting little corner of sport, the men's heavyweight division, and at the highest level, arguably the most prestigious title in sport.
I think the Heavyweight division is an awful one because it's full of slackers once you takeaway the top layer. Allen vs Darch is a perfect example of how ropey that division can be, Charr vs Lovejoy recently, absolutely ridiculous This content is protected
There are definitely loads of blokes out there that could knock out the likes of Lovejoy but would never consider boxing. The only thing the guy has going for him is height. Nothing else. That was a farce and Charr is an absolute joke himself. One of the biggest narcissistic posers in boxing. This guy still masquerades as a former world champion. No shame.
This content is protected I don't quite get what he's on about here, he lost every round and got battered for all of then and barely threw or landed anything in the second half of the fight, it was his first defeat and soon after Ortiz would batter him around the place until the World had seen enough. "Really got things going", brain damage?
He retires, then says he's coming out of retirement and wants to face the guy who is stealing the limelight once criminally afforded to him.
Surely they can get some sort of belt on the line for this? WBA Silver International Comedian Pudding.
I do wonder what his genuine end goal is here. I don’t get the impression Hearn wants to use him again. He didn’t like how he was talking after sparring Usyk.
Honestly I think Price took years off Allen's life. It's sad to see but it was a terrible matchup for him. Maybe he can get an area or English title with good matchmaking and timing but he has shown worrying signs of damage from his fights.
