King pushed him into title bouts WAY too early, he had an eye problem that had started long ago, looked bad against Mullings and I think Bouduani, so he was put it in with Felix Trinidad to cash him out because his eye was a big issue, Trinidad fouled and beat the crap out of him, ending his career essentially. He lost to no hopers at super middleweight later on. Damn sad. I wish I could be his friend.
nice post. i dont know what hes doing in marquette if he has no family there. its like 95 percent white.
Is he broke? I hope he at least never has to work again and promoters/managers didnt rob him. I remember the Sam Hill fight and remember he was pretty emotional in the post fight interview. Sad....
he had one of the shortest careers that started off with so much promise.... you also are important at one time and in an instant you are yesterdays news.... to nice guys like him, its tough to handle
Sucks. It really does. I totally buy the brain damage theory too, only as I saw what his reactions were like when he got hit later on after losing to Trinidad. It wasn't just that he got hurt by shots by guys who had no business even landing those shots on him......it was the almost "electrical blackout" sort of thing his legs did when he was hit. Very unusual and spoke to him being really damaged. Profoundly so. Terrible thing, he didn't have very many fights, either.
Alfredo Duvergel, the Cuban he beat to get the gold medal, is a forgotten alcoholic nowadays. Both are terribly sad stories.
Very depressing article. Its just another boxer that has fall on hard times. But it never gets easier listening these stories.
I thought David Reid was dead....that he got run over by his own car after slipping on leaves, or something. I must be thinking of someone else.
He feels comfortable there. It's a chill place, lot less hassle than in Philly. Plus knowing that coach Mitchell is nearby gives him some added peace.
