You can't really use what David Reid did in a fight with Trinidad to gauge his total skills...If anything the fight proved that he had even greater potential, When you're that young fighting such an incredible power puncher at Tito's best physical shape and absolute prime weight you're going to be hesitant. There is no doubt in my mind that Reid could have shown to be 2x the fighter that he showed when he was in against Trinidad. We are talking about a 14-0 fighter fighting an ATG puncher in Trinidad who was at absolute physical prime! It is crazy!!! I'm not lying I was rooting for Trinidad to beat Reid down, but in retrospective it is a tragedy what happened to that guy.
I'm not sure how much Reid could've done with that eye. In fact, the eye and his vulnerability might be the reason why his team put him in there with Trinidad. To cash out and get a big payday before it's too late. Reid's athleticism impressed me, but even before the Trinidad loss, his wins over Boudouiani and Kelly didn't really show that he had a really solid skill-set. I think it's Vargas's skill-set that gets overlooked nowadays. Vargas went about even (very close fight) with Wright. He got criticized back then but now it's more known how good Winky really is, and we see that it was indeed a good performance to fight even for 12 with a fighter of Wright's caliber. Vargas didn't have the athleticism and speed of Reid, but he had the technical skills that Reid lacked. Another thing that impressed me was Nando's stamina and workrate. He threw a lot of punches in the fights with Winky and Quartey. Not just little bull**** punches, but real punches with conviction behind them.
Good fight. Reid was more naturally talented, good athleticism, speed, flash ect but Vargas was more fundamentally sound in my opinion and a better all-around fighter.
I Agree with this, But I just don't think we ever were able to see the full potential of David Reid, experience does big things for fighters and Reid made a GREAT case for himself against Felix Trinidad and he was virtually experience less.
Yeah that is very possible. That and a complete underestimation of Trinidad's power is why they took that fight, and they got burned alive for it.
Reid has amazing handspeed but some stamina issues. he had at most 20-30 fights in his career tops because the eye wouldn't allow him to fight. he didn't fight Tito because he was ready but because America Presents and David had an agreement to make as much money as fast as possible. don't get me wrong, David went into the fight thinking he could win as ever fighter does, but they took the fight because good money was involved and if he won against Trinidad a possible De la Hoya fight loomed and that would have meant major money. Reid hoped that his speed could off set Tito's tremendous power and it worked early on. tito came on strong and David faded down the stretch. David wasn't the same after the Trinidad fight but he wold never of had a storied all time great career. Reid and Vargas would have been a good fight. David would start fast and win the first 3-4 and Vargas would respond in the middle rounds. who could win the final rounds would take the fight. vargas would probably take it.
