It's not necessary for Johnson to score a one punch KO, or even a combination knockout; many fights under these rules ended due to exhaustion on the part of one competitor or the other.
I'd give Tyson a far better chance, because of his lateral movement, speed, punching power and evasiveness. Form this list Tua is on a par with Tyson in terms of punching power, that's it. He had a rock solid jaw, sure, and could bang with the best, but in truth he's far too one dimensional and predictible to favour against a defensive fighter of Johnsons calibre. Johnson wouldn't need to second guess, Tua would move towards him in a straight line advance, Johnson would be first there and consequently parry/block/clinch Tuas attacks, whilst throwing hurtful uppercuts and heavy shots to his body. Tua has a punchers chance, sure, but with the lack of variety in his armoury I can't really see this materializing. :good
Tua had a top chin ,fast hands but slow feet, coming in to Johnson he would be vulnerable to Jacks uppercut, then again Johnson would be careful of throwing it from the right side lest he be countered by Tuas hook,I didnt like the way Tua settled for survival against Lewis after sampling a couple of rights and some jabs, against Johnson who had better defence than Lewis he would eat quite a few lefts and be contained in the clinches ,Johnson would do what that Peurto Rican heavy,[his name escapes me],nearly did stay one jump ahead and take a decision.
To my knowledge, no one has tried to claim Johnson would knock Tua out. However, I'm sure you're aware that fights can't only end by KO. Tua has the power to knock Johnson out, but he's short, slow, ponderous, one-dimensional, and has a very predictable/limited offense. For nearly all of his big wins, he's relied on coming through with one huge shot somewhere along the line. When that hasn't happened for him, he's been outpointed. Johnson was an extremely athletic, talented, and skilled fighter and would be very capable of avoiding Tua's repeated, predictable straight-ahead left-hook lunges and outboxing him for a sound UD.
Call me crazy, but weren't most true London Prize Ring Rules fights fought with no round limits, thus eliminating the possibility of a UD? This fight would have to end with Tua KO'ing Johnson in the early to middle (by the standards of how long fights went then) rounds, or Johnson wearing Tua down late and stopping him by exhaustion/accumulation. My money's on the former, but it wouldn't shock me at all if Johnson won by the latter method. Here's the link to a basic explanation of the rules:http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/London_Prize_Ring_rules
Tua stops Johnson. It is correct, that LPR rules don't have a decision, except for circumstances that don't allow the fight to continue, or a disqualification.
Oh I can see your going to be real asset to this forum, with your cool appraisals and tactful, diplomatic arguments.
Read the original post new friend. These are London Prize Ring Rules. In other words, when Johnson "throws one punch and grabs" the referee isn't going to come floating in and break them; in short most of what you're describing is irrelevant. By the way, plenty of fighters threw plenty of punches - though not often against Johnson, it tended to be suicide. Every fighter who has ever been knocked out by one punch. There are plenty of them. He seemed plenty bothered by Lewis to me. But it's true to say he had a great chin and probably wouldn't be knocked out by Johnson (who could bang). Again, have a read through the thread. I never said Johnson would knock out Tua with punches; he doesn't have to do so. In terms of stamina there is literally no comparison between these two. Your description of JJ as "190 pound fighter" is innacurate or disingenuos. He weighed in at around 210 for perhaps his peak performances against the massive, heavy hitting (but rusty) Jeffries and around 220 for the losing effort against the giant Willard. "No chin"? The guy fought numerous ATG fighters without being stopped, you need to do your homework friend.
London Rules? Tua. He's too strong. Queesberry Rules? I'll go with Johnson via decsion, though it is not a sure bet.
Very interesting. I'd say Johnson is strong enough for Tua, personally, i'd also say that the way Tua pushes in with his punches/bulls combined with Johnson's understanding of the physics makes for a nice intangible. Interesting post though.
