Is this the only photo of that bout? And he was also much more than a fat drunk. Someone with better selection of words might also describe him as great, revered, respected, tough, hard hitting, and the heavyweight champion of the world. Lest we start describing boxers by their vices.
Yup, and if Corbett tries to run then Tua's trainer should tell tua to just stay put or maybe even back up himself to let corbett come to him
It's not a great photo to determine what you're getting at. At all. And you keep posting it. Here's an unflattering photo of Tua at 28 years old. https://i.ytimg.com/vi/WE-2OIHaxPY/hqdefault.jpg Does this photo tell the story of Tua? Does this photo change your opinion on his ability? His power? Why people rate him?
Agreed that it's difficult to tell. As someone who's been into photography for decades, and as someone who has grown into a bit of a resolution snob, it's hard to get any true detail out of that. He may not look as bad as that image might suggest depending on the placement of his arm, the angle of his waist, and several other variables. On the other hand, it's possible that he actually looked even worse than that image suggests, too. Impossible to say with any certainty, especially given the fact that image probably underwent a good deal of touch-ups to get it to that point. And even then, it's not properly exposed and contains a good deal of noise.
we know jim was happy to stink up rounds and get booed to win, we know you can't win rounds in a finish fight, and we know tua has no experience of pacing himself in a finish fight. corbett would know these things too, and, whatever you think of his ability, he wasn't stupid.
He was all of those things but not when he fought Corbett. Do you think Sullivan improved the muscularity of his physique in the 5 years after that photo was taken? He was still Champion , but that was because he hadn't defended his title in 4.5years! Hows this? This content is protected Or this? This content is protected This? There is no "might "about it he looks in terrible shape for the ring. He fought Corbett 5 years later having had 4 fights in between and none in the the 4.5years prior to the Corbett one. During which time he fell out of the back of a moving train, stone drunk and was unconscious when he was found, What would you say is the probability of him being in better shape? "Young and agile, Corbett outboxed Sullivan, who was out of condition as a result of his indulgent lifestyle. Corbett stayed clear of the champion for twelve rounds and by the seventeenth, Corbetts forays were wearing Sullivan down and he had a clear advantage. Corbett knocked out Sullivan in the 21st round. "
Even Sullivan's trainers admitted he was "hog fat" for the Corbett fight, saying that all the good visual effect was due to "excessive rubbing", which I assume was massage work. I seem to remember reading that Sullivan's great compromise was to cut down to only a few pints of ale a day.
Oquendo was no novice by any reasonable meaning of the word. Moorer wasn't nearly as dilapidated as Sullivan and he was also a taller southpaw with superior skills, technique, and reach to boot.
