I think the Shane fight was probably his best perfomance but he still got outslicked. The Vargas fight is also good because he pulled off the win in good fashion.
His gutsiest performance was probably the Quartey fight. His finest boxing performance was either the Whitaker fight or the Trinidad fight. I know Whitaker was on the decline - but Oscar mixed up his boxing and combinations nicely to outwork the superior boxer. He put on the finest boxing performance of his career in the Trinidad fight. In the Vargas and Mayorga fights - he put it all together by boxing then punching and took out his opponent. His first losing effort against Mosley would have been enough to beat most fighters - but not Shane on that night.
My personal favorites are the first Mosley fight, the Vargas fight, and the Quartey fight. I'm talking pure entertainment value here. I have a different list for best performance. Oscar like Tito has a bit of drama missing from half their fights because they kod opponents too early. Let's face it, memorable and entertaining fights are fights where they are struggling a bit.
That's one of my favorite Oscar fights. You had Roy Jones commentating it. Oscar was young and as fast as ever, and he and Ruelas did not like each other. The blistering combo's oscar threw were unreal.
Vargas was probably Oscar's most emotional fight and win. Quartey was a great come from behind win but Quartey was not on Trinidad or Mosley's level. It's really had to say what his best fight was. Some of the fights he fought great, he lost or threw it away, or started gassing out and couldn't finish the last few rounds the way he should have. I think Oscar was his best under Alcazar, not Mayweather. He used to bounce and box beautifully before he met up with Mayweather who turned him into more of a flat footed puncher who relied on the shoulder roll rather than getting out using his foot movement.
I'm still thinking about DLH's vicious left hook kd over Mayorga. Best fight in my opinion is the Mosley 1 fight and his best performance is in the first 8 rds of the Tito fight. I'm a Tito fan but I have to admit he did make Trinidad look bad. Not really embarrasing but just a good display especially getting in and out with combos. Say what you want but Hoya fought everybody and ducked no one. He's truly a future HOF'er.
There was nothing like a good De La Hoya fight night. We obvioulsy all have our own favorite fighters, but I think that only one a lifetime comes around that actually motivates you in life by just watching their fights and even their interviews. I think every boxing fan has that one special fighter that is unequaled once they retire. For me, that was Oscar. Every time he fought it was a huge event for me. I can remember where I was for just about every Oscar fight in the mid-late 90's and 2000's. Even the nights at some strange bar alone, or the other times I would order it on PPV at my moms house. The rest of the time was out with friends and watching oscar fight was the greatest kick-off to an awesome night out. All good things come to an end though, and even though I still watch some of the big fights and have a couple of favorite fighters, none of them will be like De La Hoya.
How? Vargas has been allready exposed by Trinidad. His best fight was also the fight he let slip out his hands and that was the Trinidad fight
I've always liked the Mayorga fight because of the build up and the first round KD but the Vargas fight was a real challenge and he delivered the goods. Can't pick one.
Not a serious vote but Genaro Gernandez fight deserves an honorable mention. He was hard on himself post fight but just love that slick amateur style he had in the old days.
