I didnt need to cherry pick it. I can see it very clearly on the film. Anyone with one eye and half a brain cell can see it. Nevermind that Sharkey didnt go down clutching his jaw from Dempsey hercules like left hook (lol) he went down clutching his family jewels. Sorry but the myth that Dempsey knocked Sharkey out with that left is pure unadulterated horse****. If Sharkey had enough wherewithal to even try to milk the DQ by clutching his nuts then he wasnt knocked out by some dynamite punch and the sad fact is that there were numerous low blows captured clearly on camera preceding the supposed knockout. The fact is that you dont like it when people dont share the same lofty opinion of Dempsey that you do. When people illustrate to you that even in his own time the same criticisms were prevalent you claim we are cherry picking. If you had ever done 1/100th the research into the contemporary sources of this era that I have youd realize how asinine your comment that you can find anything to support a supposed argument in the old papers. My suggestion is that if you dont like hearing criticisms of Dempsey then dont read the old papers and dont come onto boxing forums with people who have. Instead close yourself off to the world and curl up with that hagiography by Roger Kahn "A Flame of Pure Fire." Thats definately more to your liking. I prefer to read BOTH sides of the story. Vocalizing both sides of the story and citing sources that were a lot closer and knew a lot more than you isnt cherry picking. Dempsey was a fraud. Period. Yeah I said it. He became a contender on the back of several fights that most people thought were fixed, won his title from a fat, out of shape, ill trained oaf who hadnt fought in three years, defended it against a succession of men who didnt deserve to be anywhere near a HW title shot (and fought in constant violation of rules despite what his ignorant fans today believe), and avoided his top contender for seven ****ing years. If thats the guy who want to pretend was some killer. Go ahead, but you better grow a thick skin and get used to me continuing to point all of that out. And if you want to argue with me about it you better come with something more than dewy eyed hero worship. So far thats all Ive ever seen from you "houdini." - Klompton

In regards to Maxine Cates, autobiographies and biographies of Jack Dempsey (at least the ones I have read) list her quite a bit older than Dempsey and that she died in a fire in a Juarez, Mexico dance hall. Not only do available documents list her being about a year younger than Dempsey, they also show that she later married a man name Don Smith Devin and died in Kansas City, Missouri during the late 1930s.

    Thank you.

I have myself tried to search for some information on Maxine Cates (sometimes spelled Gates), and have come across a Maxine Cates Devin - but wasn't sure, if this was indeed the former wife of Dempsey. So thanks for clearing that up.

I once stayed at a hotel in Chiswick called The Moran. The room was so small that I could put my feet up on the bed while on the toilet. I guess I was a moron for staying at The Moran.

I don't know that I want to adopt all the hyperbole set forth in this post, but I agree with the general tenor of it, particularly that Sharkey was severely fouled in the 1927 fight and that under the way the state athletic commission rules of the era were enforced in other fights, Sharkey should have been declared the winner over Dempsey by disqualification.

100%. On Dempsey, his fan base has issues that can not be over come as history and facts stand in the way.

The most obvious is the clear avoidance of Harry Wills or Greb, his two best possible opponents.

The Ko1 to Flynn does not look good, nor do the losses and draws to Meehan.

And finally controversy clouds his best wins. Willard, Fripo and Sharkey

Jack Dempsey after the fight with Fripo:

"He is game and the hardest puncher I ever faced. It was the first time I was knocked down since I became champion and I'll never forget it. I saw eight million stars when I got that punch on the chin that knocked me out of the ring. ... I didn't even know he had knocked me out of the ring until I came to on my stool between rounds. I thought I had been knocked out."

On the rules, technically Firpo should have been the winner:

" It was a violation of the Rules of Boxing for the newspapermen to push Dempsey back into the ring. The rules state: "If a boxer is knocked out of the ring, he gets a count of 20 to get back in and on his feet. He cannot be assisted." Some people question to this day whether Dempsey would have been able to “beat the count” if not for this push back into the ring. "

A re-match made all the sense in the world! We never saw one.
