You'll never hear the pro-Firpo club coming to his rescue regarding his boxing, so look at what he did bring - a huge wallop, plenty of pressure and the willingness to fight to the bone. Many fighters have fit this mold and they've all been a handful. If these big contenders of the day were truly bums then we still have Dempsey's performances, which were more exsplosive and efficient against them. It's a simple point - Dempsey's style adhered to the bigger, slower target that he could circle and pounce on.
I think Chris's point though, is that the big men who Demspey fought like Big Bill Tate, Luis Firpo and Jess Willard were very untalented for big men. Sure, they could all hit and were aggressive, but they lacked essential skills. I think Dempsey could have beaten modern big men who lacked in such talent like Cooney for example, but a big man who could also box and move like Lewis, Bowe, Holmes, Wlad Kiltiscko, etc. might be a problem.
That's reasonable, but it was partly related to the fantasy match-up. Foreman was not really one of those 'movers' and his style was designed to get involved. In defence, it's quite something how quickly Dempsey was able to get at the bigger man and work him. Jess Willard was no classy boxer, but very tough and yet just a couple of well placed Dempsey shots made the walls cave in. Fred Fulton was a decent fighter, not a toughie, but a solid boxer, and Dempsey needed just eighteen seconds to have a ten count standing over him. Jack seemed to excel at getting at a bigger man. If your anatomical position was one of over 6,2 and 200lbs, whether good, average or poor, Dempsey's overhand hooks and heart shots proved the poison.
A former champion will always atract a certain boxoffice interest even if he is past his best. Hasim Ramhan and Shannon Briggs are basicaly trading on this today.
In the days of four champs per division perhaps, but it'd be a different story if, say, Wladimir was undisputed champ and he defended twice a year.
I think it would be a battle of speed and power vs raw power and size, we must remember when judging a champion fantasy fight we must blend the training methods and size factor of the times, weather or not weights were used or not to inhance weight. Dempsey was staggered and dropped by the Crude Firpo so it is not impossible to imagine Foreman doing it. Foreman was dropped and hurt by the slower and less than lethal Lyle so it is not hard to imagine a faster 2 fisted Dempsey with killer instinct finishing George off. I dont want to hear weight differences that is an ERA thing...this fight is a shootout but I tend to favor the Demspsey of the Willard fight but really it would be who caught who with the best shots 1st or who could avoid getting hit better...this fight would really suprise me if it went 5
