Well, this is the quote from page 81 taken from a column by Joe Williams from March 10, 1930. Flynn in answer to a question not quoted--"Well, it is like this way. I hit him with a one-two. But just put it down that I didn't exactly knock Dempsey out. He just forgot to duck." You and Cavanaugh take this as "proof" that Flynn thinks he didn't KO Dempsey. I take it as sarcasm. "I hit him with a one-two." Dempsey goes down for ten seconds and is carried back to his corner. But Flynn in my view is commenting that he still isn't getting credit, as he just couldn't have been good enough to do that even to a green Dempsey. Can I prove my take? No. But that is the problem with quotes. Basically hearsay. We don't know if the man is being quoted accurately, nor how exactly he meant what he is quoted as saying, if quoted precisely.
