its not hating if he didnt fight the best fighters of his era when it mattered.
calzagfhe was a very good fighter - you won't hear me say otherwise - but he had a major achilles heel, and that was allowing frank warren to milk title defences rather than test himself against the best when it mattered.

 

It's an historical fact, that if a fighter wants to get made and paid, they come to the USA. Fighters been doing it for a century. Now, just because Calzaghe didn't make his way to the US doesn't take away from his incredible skills.

 

i agree...to a point.
people can't talk about calzaghe being a 'G' when the best fighters of his era were a division above and below him and he did nothing in the US when they were kings.

you can't laud a fighter's ability when they consciously avoid the best fighters of their era.

i'm not suggesting for one minute that calzaghe wasn't a very good fighter. he was.
but the fact that you have to link the sheika fight as some kind of career achievement just reinforces the point i was making.

 

He was just too slippery.

 

He still fought Hopkins before he was shot and they age at the same rate.

 

Boxing in the 1990s was dead in the UK. All the big fights and big money was in America.
