Well, there goes the next great american derrrrrrrrrrr...... I've heard his punch resistance might be pretty terrible, didn't he get knocked in the amateurs?
Yeah, word from the amatuers was he was chinny. Thats too bad. Hope putting on some weight helps to solve that.
Aw come on. Lets not forget here that Wladdy was stopped by a journeyman early- that didn't end his career. Deontay is a work in progress. We all know that. HE is going to have a lot of ups and downs before he is ready to make a run at being the top man.
He got starched bad by a guy not good enough to even make the Russian federations traveling squad, in the amateurs. However, I would be more concerned if the events tonight that unfolded were accurate. At least he did comeback and score a stoppage victory.
To be fair, Sconiers is a solidly built 6'2"/220 and was himself nearly an Olympian back in 1996. He's also sprung the odd upset, albeit few and far between on his overall losing record. It is cause for alarm, but perhaps also good for Wilder. As has been said, he rallied back and fought through it. That's a good thing to learn how to do early on in a career.
I dont think hes the best American heavyweight prospect around, seth mitchell is imo despite Wilder being more well known. He won last night too and hes facing a higher level of competition.I think hed beat Wilder if they ever fight
My only issue is that he has purportedly been shown to be chinny on a couple of occasions. Hard to succeed in the HW division with a leaky defense and a weak chin. Good point with Wladimir though, Wilder can overcome his beard in today's division with his athleticism and a good trainer.
Made the Olympic team like 2 years after putting on gloves for the first time, won national Golden Gloves with less fights than anyone ever. His learning curve is dictated by the lack of amateur experience. He needs to take his time and the Sconiers fight was a nice step up where he showed he can handle adversity.
I haven't seen the fight but there are a couple ways of looking at this. On one hand he takes his first step up and gets dropped pretty badly from what I've read. Wilder seems like he doesn't have a great punch resistance and then a journeyman drops him hard, you have to wonder is he a new version of Michael Grant,I think Grant was better than he is made out to be today, but never lived up to the hype partly due to his chin. Will Wilder be next? On the other hand, Wilder did pull himself together and knock Sconiers out himself, that says a lot about a fighter and many fighters have gotten knocked down early in their careers by Sconiers type of fighters and gone on to have success. I also thought, despite the record, Sconiers was a huge step up for Wilder and even more so for 2 weeks notice. Wilder went from basically fighting guys pulled off the street to facing an actual professional journeyman. I still think Wilder is going to be a good heavyweight and a fight like this one should make him better. We'll know more in his next several fights and now that he's facing guys like Sconiers I hope he doesn't regress and go back to fighting guys from the bottom of the barrell again. He may have had some rough spots but he won the fight and should be better because of it.
A: 2015. In a world title bout. ...and the bronze medal is no longer his pinnacle achievement on paper. :think
