He should be able to stay in the top ten and fight in a title eliminator or two, which will define him as a contender. How serious of a contender he is for a world championship will be determined by his ability/commitment to improve his game.
he has loads of talent, I think he might be a little green tho he's only 23. i say contender once he matures he will be a great champ
Until he flopped against Bradley, he was neck and neck in the race to be the young, slick black fighter who deserved a shot at Manny more than Mosley did. Now he and Bradley are both being downplayed by the very people who overhyped them. Meh. C'est la vie. That being said, the guy is 23. Most fighters will have a bump in the road but if he shows to have the desire to improve and maybe changes his style from throwing punches and yelling karate sounds to dazzle the judges, he will be back in contention some day. He has plenty of time to regroup and come back.
cant stand devon but i voted champion. kids only 23 and hes got skills. dont care to watch his fights unless hes fighting one of the guys i root for, but he will be a champion again. hope he fights maidana and maidana makes him quit too
He's too one dimensional and not good at adapting. He only looked impressive against urango, kotelnik made him looked ugly and bradley make him look like a pretender
Unreal the way fans can turn on a fighter. I have never been convinced by Devon Alexander, even before the Kotelink fight I was asking what it is that other people see in him, that I dont, and was I missing something? so its not like im playing revisionist historian or anything, that said, I did always think he was a good fighter, still do, just not as good as being touted as. I just find it unreal how cold people have gone on him from being all over his nuts. I can recall Dan Rafael saying after knocking Urango out, before the Kotelnik performance, that he had the ability to be on the level of a Floyd Mayweather.
If he doesn't get a new trainer. He should have improved from the Kotelnik fight but he didn't. Throws jab just to throw it. Meaning it doesn't land. Can't fight on the inside AT ALL. He needs to improve.
Kotelnik beat Alexander and so did Maidana, but Alexander had his referee and judges, his home town, everything...........
People forget he was once no lower than 3rd at 140 when the division was red hot. Since this thread he's gone on to beat Matthysse in a close controversial fight (I scored it one point to Lucas), Randall Bailey for the IBF at 147 who was a horrible WW titlist, Maidana at 147 which looks quite nice in retrospect despite it being both of their first fights their, and Lee Purdy which is just a nice little stat pad. Then the big upset wipeout loss to Shawn Porter. All in all a mixed bag. If you told someone who his next 5 opponents would be back when this thread was made, I'm pretty sure most of us would have said at least 2 losses, potentially 3, and praised his willingness to fight three powerful punchers.
