I really don't think Manny Steward changed all that much in Pryor in 1983. Pryor was still a swarmer who threw caution into the wind.. Pryor was his typical wild and crazy self, but by '83 it was Allie Arguello who was more so shopworn and slower than ever before... Pryor had an easier time with Arguello come the rematch, but Arguello was fading while Pryor was still peaked in his career.... MR.BILL:hat
That beating to Pryor in November of 1982 had to take a lot out of Arguello. Pryor was great, but if you matched Arguello at his best weight and time to Pryor at his best weight and time, Alexis stops Pryor in about round 10.
Pryor was always gonna be about 8 to 10 pounds heavier then Arguello if you mention peak yrs and weights...... Pryor was a lightweight at 135, while Arguello was a featherweight of 126 pounds.... No way Pryor could drop down to 130 and be fully strong and energetic.... By 1982, Pryor was very comfortable at the full 140 pounds........ Though I agree that Arguello was more technically sound as a prime fighter when pitted against the sloppiness of Pryor's technique..... No doubt there.... MR.BILL:thumbsup
At 147, I think Hearns would waste Pryor early and ugly. I don't think Leonard would take him out quick and early, even though I think pretty highly of Leonard's power (especially his left hook) and of course, his great finishing skills. He'd still win decisively, but I think it'd last longer and is not the stylistic/size mismatch of Hearns-Pryor.
Pryor beat Hearns in the Amateurs. That being said, I think Hearns would have strecthed Pryor in the pros. The same with Leonard. Pryor was an outstanding fighter but a step below the all time greats. His 2 signature wins over Cervantes and Arguello were great, but he didn't beat anybody else of note.
Aaron Pryor is one of the greatest 140Lb champs of all time. It really isn't his fault big fights never came his way he called out ray leonard for years but no one wanted any piece of him.
****.... By '80, neither "SRL" or "The Hitman" could ever make 140 anymore......... And Pryor was NOT going to 147 to fight them dudes there.... And for Mancini, well, he was fodder to be eaten..... MR.BILL
He was a cheating POS that got knocked on his ass just about every fight, and cheated in his only significant victory agianst a less than prime fighter. Ray Mancini probably smokes Pryor, let alone KT or any other ATG jr. lw.
It was Emmanuel Steward who asked the NSAC to test Leonard for Steroids, leading up to the Hearns rematch, as Leonard looked to bulked up and chiseled with lean mass........ The NSAC refused Emmanuel Steward's request. ........I believe Emmanuel Steward got suspicious of Leonard when he saw how ripped and chiseled he was for the Hagler fight..... However, Steward was in not position to make a stink about the NSAC refusing him or make Leonard take a drug test outside the commision.......Hearns had looked absolutely terrible in his fight with James Kinchen, a fight he got a gift in, and he was in no position to dictate terms to a media darling like Leonard, unfortunately.
Yeah Lopez was in the class of Pryor . Tsyzu doesn't beat Pryor, it doesn't happen. Pryor's would be like Vince Phillips X30. You can even make a case for Pryor beating Chavez too. Whitaker and Duran beat him at both 135 and 140 of course. And like other's have said, yes he was an ATG. Top 60 atleast.
i was under the impression pryor would move up to 147 to fight leonard. he'd get his ass handed to him but i figured he wanted the shot
These Legendary Nights myths need to cease. He was offered fights by both Duran and Leonard. He rejected the Leonard fight because he wanted more money and managerial issues ****ed up the Duran fight. Managerial/personal problems also ****ed up a unification bout with Mamby.
