The quote appears to have first appeared in the wild on the boxingsceene.com forum on 22/4/2008 and was made by a user called uppercutz, it was his 4th and last post on the forum......I say bull****.
I do remember Calzaghe saying that "the only person that is on my level is Roy Jones. Maybe in his prime he is the only person I might lose to" Or words to that effect.
Why would calzaghe say that when at the time he was calling Roy out after fights?!!! Can't see him saying it..... any source for the quote?!
I'd say it was true. It's supposed to be from June 2003, around the Ruiz fight time. He was also making these similar type comments in June 2003 in another interview. "I could probably give Jones a tough fight, probably the best fight he's ever had," said Calzaghe. "But I know my capabilities and unless I got paid the crown jewels I wouldn't want to risk it." wow. that's a nice catch of a quote. If I hear a roy hater say he ducked calz I'm going to pull that one out of the fire.
Michalczewksi most certainly does not have the edge there. He stopped Griffin in 4th after he had lost the 1st 3 rounds on all 3 judges cards. Jones Jr lost 1st fight with Griffin by disqualification while he was leading on 2 judges cards then KO'd him in the 1st round of a rematch. The edge clearly lies with Jones Jr.
This quote just got put on another thread by a veteran poster, so I wouldn't doubt its veracity: "I could probably give Jones a tough fight, probably the best fight he's ever had," said Calzaghe. "But I know my capabilities and unless I got paid the crown jewels I wouldn't want to risk it."
Lets hope he still feels the same after Jones hands him his first loss come November .. WAR JONES :bbb :deal
Jones now moves like he has a sandbag on each foot, and appears to have the stamina of a sixty a day smoker.
"I'm not chasing after Roy Jones. Be honest, Roy Jones is a good fighter and I don't want tough fights, I just want big money." Joe Calzaghe - The Daily Mirror - June 1 - 1999 This content is protected
