I just watched this fight and had to replay about 5 rounds that I couldn't decide who had gotten the better of it. And after an hour and a half of my life that I will never get back I ended up scoring it 5 rounds to JC, 3 rounds to B-Hop, and 4 rounds even for a tally of 116-115 for Calzaghe. And to be completely honest: I am still not sure who won that fight, and I really wouldn't have been a bit upset if they had called it a draw due to the ineptitude that 2 of the best fighters of this generation showed on that given night. At the end of the day, and IMHO Bernard lost that fight more than Joe won it. Neither guy gave in one bit and neither stepped up, they fought very cautiously and produced a true stinker. * I know that you aren't supposed to score rounds even, but that is bull****. There are tons of fights and rounds that are razor close that neither fighter clearly wins. So I scored it and watched it as closely as I possibly could, and there is no other score I could come up with.
you know what i'm actually gonna watch this pathetic fight because i have never seen this disgraceful piece of **** fight in it's entirety. I'll get back with my scorecard. The best part is Hopkins knocking down Calzaghe....Prime Calzaghe would get PWNED by Prime Hopkins, it would still be a horrible fight tho.
Had Joe by one point. Hopkins ran out of gas. I actually enjoyed the "ugly" fight, though. Hysterical to see the occasional ass **** come on here and explain how it was CLEAR for one guy or the other. O RLY?? You didn't notice the large group of people *arguing* over who won it? LOL Cute stuff, ass ****s. :yep
OK just watched the fight I had Calzaghe winning. I'm a Hopkins fan. Hopkins/Calzaghe R1: 10 - 8 R2: 10 - 9 R3: 9 - 10 R4: 9 - 10 R5: 9 - 10 R6: 9 - 10 R7: 10 - 10 R8: 9 - 10 R9: 9 - 10 R10: 10 - 9 R11: 10 - 10 R12: 9 - 10 116 - 113 Joe Calzaghe Some thoughts about the fighters.... - Hopkins is so ****en dirty :rofl - Calzaghe has the worst most sloppy punching technique i have ever ****en seen :verysad - If Calzaghe ever got in the ring with a 90's Jones he'd be getting counterpunched to his death and I could see Roy KTFO Calzaghe honestly. Calzaghe doesn't have a solid chin it can definitely be cracked.
Anyone who says t was a clear win for Hopkins is clearly a fan of his or just totally inept at scoring. That said, Hopkins did the better work. If the fight was scored as a whole instead of by rounds, Hopkins would have won. Calzaghe took the rounds. I've watched it 3 or 4 times, and the first time I didn't score it but I had no idea who it was going to after the fight. The times I scored it I gave it to Calzaghe by 1 or 2 points each time. Slaps count more than holding, and anyone who says Calzaghe won on 'workrate' alone while Hopkins landed clean, effective punches probably only watched the first third of the fight. I can't blame you, but come on. Those slaps were landing, landing frequently, and clearly troubling Hopkins just as much as Hopkins occasional counters were bothering Joe. And like they say, it always comes down to who you would rather be. Hopkins didn't look like he had any answers, was badly tired, holding at every opportunity, whereas Joe was pressuring him, tiring him out, and yes, slapping him in the face quite frequently. Calzaghe won that fight. Get over it, move on with your life. And don't bring up the age unless you want me to tell you about how Hopkins beat the **** out of Kelly Pavlik, who was much younger than Calzaghe and hit much harder. Of course Pavlik had to go up in weight, but then again so did just about everyone else Hopkins ever beat ;p
That may be true, but remember, Calzaghe had just moved up to LHW, had rarely been hurt, and always displayed amazing recuperative ability. It's questionable whether the KD's from Hopkins and Jones even hurt him as they seemed to be more balance-related, and Calzaghe showed no effects after he got up. And the Calzaghe of say 1997 had much different punch technique, while still throwing with the volume he had in 2008. In other words, he threw a lot of punches and they were actually punches. But Calzaghe was always counterable--the two times he went down earlier in his career were both from counterpunches. So one would assume Jones would counter him quite a bit. But Calzaghe would also hit Jones MUCH more than anybody else ever did, and we all know about Roy's punch resistance... It would have been a hell of a fight.
Same for me, first 4 and I can't remember the other one but I think it was like the 10th or 11th. so 113 - 114 to Joe. A close fight but I scored it like that at the fight and then when I watched it when I got home.
JC is probably my least favorite fighter.... ever. I was rooting for Hopkins but from what i remember i scored it for JC.
I scored it 6 rounds apiece, 114-113 for Hopkins. It was a close fight--closer than a lot of people let on. That was the fight that totally sold me on Calzaghe's greatness as a fighter, though. He outworked and outhustled Hopkins down the stretch, and he actually beat him at his own game, winning the battle of adjustments. I loved that fight. A tactical chess match between two technical masters who are able to adapt and change as a fight moves on, where adjustments and counter-adjustments played a big role. I gave Hopkins rounds 1-4, 7, and 10 and I gave Joe 5, 6, 8, 9, 11, and 12. I know I am in the minority opinion with my belief that Hopkins won, and I understand why. Still, I believe it was a close fight between two of the best boxers in the business. It may not be remembered as an all time classic due to its ugly nature, but it will be a fight I always remember as a fan. I loved it!
