Perfectly legit stoppage. Byrd got caught and was hurt bad. I actually believe he would of survived the round had he not turned away from Ike with 2 seconds remaining. He clearly didn't know what was going on by acting that way. Byrd was a very talented heavyweight with cajones to take on so many naturally bigger man, including both K brother's, Tua, Holyfield, Ibeabuchi, Mccline, Golota etc. very solid win for Ibeabuchi. Shame he was crazy
He was a pretty normal guy for a while, there are posters are worked in the same gyms he used to. Sometime in his 20's he developed some kind of serious mental health issues that seemingly spiraled out of control. More or less ruined the guys life. Shame they couldn't have medicated or helped him before he lost his **** and spent a good part of his life in prison... I sometimes wonder if boxing made what may have been a pre-existing condition worse...
I honestly can't believe he didn't go down from that first monsterous Left Hook. That was crazy. Perfectly fine stoppage. If we call that a gift stoppage, it's only referring to the gift from God Byrd got by him telling the ref to stop it before he goes night night.
Man, imagine young Wlad trying to deal with the type of raw, primal aggression and pressure Ike brought? He would have panicked. Actually a match I feel "old" Wlad would be far more suited to winning. More developed jab, the ability to hold, survive, spoil, box at range.
There's a lot of it around, Russ. Whenever Ike is mentioned on a thread there's a sizeable contingency having him whup all but the very best.
I wonder if the combination of the brutal fight with Tua and heavy PED use didnt put Ike over the edge. It couldnt have helped him, put it that way. Chris Byrd is an incredibly admirable and brave fighter in my opinion. For a natural 190 pound guy ( if he was in absolute perfect shape for a 15 round fight ) to have had such a good record at heavyweight speaks volume about his bravery n guts. The guy never ducked anyone. It takes more cojones to be a light handed boxer who relies on outpointing and outsmarting one's opposition than any other style except perhaps the face first swarming style in my opinion. Guys like Jimmy Young and Chris Byrd have always made me shake my head at their courage. Imagine fighting an Ibeabuchi or even a Wladimir K knowing that you cant hurt them and have to rely on guile. Truly brave men.
The ref is supposed to stop the fight when the fighter can't protect himself. Not when he isn't throwing punches back. It just happens that oftentimes the ability to throw punches shows ability to protect yourself. Byrd happened to be slipping a large amount of Ike's sloppy punches. There was nothing "textbook" about this stoppage.
Well let's thank God that you weren't reffing then. Ike was caning him..Byrd werent surviving much longer, Ike gets the win.. Byrd goes home in one piece. No issues from me.
You realize there was one single second left in the round when the ref stopped it right? Whether or not he goes on to get stopped in the 6th round or win the fight is irrelevant. He should have been given the chance to continue. One minute is an enormous amount of time to recover.
So the ref should have been watching the clock instead of the hurt fighter in potential danger? At how many seconds left in the round is it acceptable to stop fights?
The refs job is to make sure the fighter's observe the rules and to protect the fighters. He is not a time keeper
