At points during the mid rds yes Lara was running, I'm a fan of the sweet science but I like boxers who actually fight. I'll watch Algeri fight again he's a counter puncher I'll watch Loma fight another standout amateur but Lara you have to engage just a little bit to win you can't land two punches then spend the rest of the rd catching bodyshots and backing away. Ineffective aggression beats inactivity and Lara wasn't active enough.
I have never accused a fighter of running, not Mayweather, not Rigo not Hopkins. I appreciate slick mobile boxers but what Lara did was run. When you're often several feet away from your opponent and can't reach your opponent for large stretches of each round, when your opponent actually has to jog in the ring to cut the distance to you, when you regularly do a full lap of the ring and only throw a jab, I'm afraid you are running. I've not seen such a passive display since Wlad/Haye.
I gave Lara round 1 and 3, gave Canelo rounds 2, 4, and 6, and scored the 5th even. Round 2 was very close. To Lara's credit, I thought Lara clearly won round 1 and 3, and Canelo clearly won round 4 and rounds 2, 5 and 6 are very debatable. Like Round 6, Lara started strong, but then just started running away for the rest of the round, and Canelo started catching up to him and wailing away at the body. It's hard to give that round to Lara.
how do you define activity? is punching the air and arms being active to you? lara outlanded drainelo overall, thats; active enough for me. drainelo acitive but ineffiicient. threw many punches that were either blocked or completley missed. some landed at the back /hip of lara.
Alvarez's head shot were mostly wiffs but he was beating down Lara's body, Lara's 1-2 punches a rd don't offset all the body work Alvarez put in 2 jabs to the head vs 4/5 hard body blows. After the 5th rd I thought Lara was on his way to a boring decision imo he lost the fight in rds 6-9, I gave Canelo all 4 rds and really that won him the fight. I don't put to much stock in punch stats all the time but Lara landed 107 punches and 60 were jabs Canelo landed 97 punches and 8 were jabs which tells you that Lara landed pitty pat shots to the head while Canelo landed crushing blows to the body. I know everyone wanted Lara to win so they could hype him as the boogey man for Mayweather and further discredit Mayweather's win over Canelo but Lara isn't as good as made out to be and it should be obvious to those who've seen some of his previous fights. He's not a bum but certainly not this ultra elite fighter people claimed he was.
If you say Lara didn't run at least part of the fight you'd probably call Usain Bolt the slickest boxer on the planet.
Lara's display of jab and retreat made me appreciate Rigo much more. At least Rigo commits to his punches when he does throw them and does so with bad intentions. Not to mention Rigo stands in the pocket with you and makes you miss then pay instead of prancing around the ring to avoid engaging. He may not have that killer instinct but he's far more effective of making his opponents pay than Lara is.
