Ive never been a fan of Hopkins. Ive found him to be a real dirty fighter and a spoiler who is generally very boring to watch. Outside of the ring he also comes across as a complete arsehole. He acted and cried his eyes out in the Calzaghe fight which I found deplorable and by all accounts, in the Jones fight he was even worse. Calling out Haye at the end of it just makes him sound ****ing delusional.
I also thought that and thought it was cheap even though I'm a fan of his. He would clearly hit Jones with an illegal punch knowing that Jones WILL retaliate then he would fake being extremely hurt to get a much needed break. He kept doing it over and over it got really pathetic and cheap for a fighter in his class.
Hopkins does anything he can to win. It's always been like this. Outside of crying like a girl every five seconds to the ref he didn't do the thing that pisses me off the most that he's done in several other fights. He hits and then holds and when ref comes in to break it up he is punching the opponent he's holding on the hip on the ref's blind side. This is the Hopkins trademark. So no, Hopkins was always a little ******* but he gets the win and that's what makes Hopkins Hopkins.
That's nothing new, I don't know why last nights fight would be revelatory in that respect. That's just Hop being Hop.
Something else to consider, Jones was actually winning the round when Hopkins pulled that. It resulted in -1 for Jones and it stole the momentum. It's no different than Trinidads low blows. Even now it looks like Roy Jones was outboxing Bernard Hopkins in the center of the ring, but Hopkins defeated Jones via guile rather than via skill. Honestly they were very even physically, neither of them had their legs, speed or timing, but Jones appeared to have more heart and stamina. So what did Hopkins do? He took Jones heart by playing into psychology. Lets remember Jones lost his first fight via DQ.
Not really, Hopkins has always used roughhouse tactics, and him falling on the ground is probably due to him being 45 years old. He did it against Calzaghe and now against RJJ. Hopkins is now really showing holes in the armor now. He probably should retire or have one more fight against a C fighter.
thats what i thought of haye-ruiz, ruiz hit haye with elbows and behind the head but every time haye hit him he complained and/or went down.
Hopkins has always been a dirty fighter, but because he is American it is explained away as him being 'old school'. Last night simply put togethr various elements of dirty tactics he has used throughout his career all in one fight, thus it was more pronounced than usual.
Something really bothers me. Everyone suddenly agrees Hopkins has always been a dirty fighter, but in the aftermath of the calzaghe fight he was some sort of tactical genious. Anyway this fight dosn't do more for B-Hops legacy than it did for Calzaghe. The only thing it does for B-hop IMO is placing him in the top 10 of the most delusional active boxers.
