He did wrap his hands illegally, yes. He applied tape directly to the knuckles which is illegal, and would stack gauze, tape, gauze, tape etc. When this gets wet (either by dipping hands in water, or from sweat) it causes the tape to harden up, and you do get much more deadly hand wraps. You aren't allowed to stack your wraps in such a manner.
Then why was his power there against joppy 5 months earlier?? Trinidad did to joppy what no other middleweight could do including hopkins and taylor. Trinidad lacked that snap against bernard.
awww this is what he did!!!! Okay cause i heard the rumor that he used to put his wraps in iced water.
I rooted for Trinidad but thought Joppy would beat him. Never in my wildest dreams did I see that knockout coming.
He lacked that snap because Hopkins never allowed him to set his legs to load up some serious punches. Just watch Hopkins' leg movement in the fight, whenever Trinidad tried to set his self Hopkins would throw something and move or constantly turn Trinidad. Even most of the punches that landed didn't have any snap by the time they got there. Hopkins knew what he was doing all night and Trinidad couldn't do anything about it.
Nope the only thing that was illegal was tape on the skin.... Keep in mind Tito moved up to 160 bigger gloves than what he was allowed to get away with at 154. Plus when is the last time you have seen Hopkins knocked on his ass?
There was times Bernard elected to trade and they would both land clean flush. Trinidads had no impact on him which is why bernard started being more aggressive in the later rounds.
Even if there was no water put on the wraps which we really dont know if thats even the case Brutha Nazim is a good story teller, your hands with out water on the wraps, get wet as soon as you start warming up with the gloves on the tape sometimes comes off and it sometimes dont.
Bernard was starting to be more aggressive in the later rounds because Trinidad already took too many punches and was clearly wearing down/tiring. Even if Trinidad landed he was never able to land as many times as he wished nor did his punches have any impact on them. All it takes is an understanding of how leg movement works to fully understand if a punch thrown has serious power behind it or not.
If you have gauzed wrapped tight over the tape, it hold it in there. Dempsey was well known for dipping his hands in ice water to harden up his wraps back in the day.
1. It's illegal for a reason. 2. Felix Trinidad Sr. is quoted admitting that it helps with power. 3. Bernard Hopkins (After he beat Trinidad) is quoted as saying that what they did was create a castlike wrap.
