@bbjc has his agenda but no problems with his posts with some very informative points made.

His assistant @Little brian does appear to be bad cop in that he abuses anyone who has a different opinion to his boss and makes wild allegations about posters that he fails to back up when challenged.

Some actually prefer the BT Sport Card to the Sky Box Office card tomorrow but he ain't having it.

If he's not on the payroll, he bloody well should be. I'd suggest that Sky and Hearn should hook him up with a free PPV for tomorrow night but I'm certain bbjc would willingly decline.

1. I haven't argued for a £100,000 limit on what a fighter can earn in a non-title fight. The potential for commercial or subscription TV is a lot more than that.

2. lots of fighters are out there getting knocked out by the best fighters in the world for a lot less.

3. Lots of footballers dream of making £200,000 week and end up making £200 week in some part-time league and working part-time as amazon delivery drivers or whatever. They just were never good enough.

You do realize these fights are world title eliminators for the likes of AJ and Fury ? Fights which would provide huge paydays and the keys to untold riches.

Povetkin IS at the end of his career.
And Whyte is coming off a loss to Povetkin.

And, actually having 2 fights a year and earning a very good living is really not a bad life at all. Obviously not for everyone.
If your job description is "professional boxer" and you do two jobs a year and earn, say, what a full-time surgeon might earn, that's nothing to cry about.

You seem to be saying every fighter on the fringes of 'world class' who is NOT on PPV is getting a raw deal.

In reality, Dillian Whyte turned down a £6,000,000 offer to face Joshua two years ago.
And we're all supposed to agree he deserves to be a "PPV star" now he's on the lower circuit getting KO'd by old has-beens like Povetkin? It makes no sense, mate.

And yet, for all that you say, almost every boxer I've ever met actually got into professional boxing because they ENJOY fighting, and to make any living from it was a dream, and the hope of being world champion was the Big Dream.

Dillian Whyte is clearly not at legitimate world champion level ..... but if he got a shot at Fury or Joshua he'd deserve a few million. (then again, 6 mill wasn't enough for him, so who knows.)
Coming off a 5th round defeat to an old veteran, he's LUCKY to be getting a 'rematch eliminator' at all.

 

I watched St.Helens against Salford last night. Two sets of players knocking absolute lumps out of each other on the Sky platform...when they finish their careers they are often left with long term injuries and unfortunately some head injuries...some earn about 30k a year genuinely. The lucky ones get between 60k-12000 which is still very modest for getting smashed to bits. Dillian and co have it good.

Thats a bit disingenuous. There are 6months worth of camps - including staying in shape and training in-between. Then there's pressers, video interviews and god knows what else. Its a full time job.

 

It is disingenuous but being paid to stay in shape and chat to IFL tv for a few million is hardly bad. The HWs don’t even have to make weight.

Of course staying in shape between fights is advisable.
But, on that subject, two fights ago we saw Dillian Whyte turn up for a fight weighing 271 pounds (20 pounds overweight, against Wach) and on the same card world champion Andy Ruiz Jr., who'se never been in shape, came in a 284 pounds and admitted after the fight than he hadn't trained, and walked off with millions.
So they get paid anyway, whether they trained 350 days a year or just 20 days a year. They openly admit they didn't stay in shape but no one sacks them for it.

I was really just responding to @bbjc who mentioned "two fights". It could be one fight, two fights, five fights, ten fights. I'm not particularly interested in how many times they fight or how much they get paid per fight. I don't begrudge any fighter any amount of pay (as long as he makes an effort to win).

The amount an individual fighter is paid is not really my concern.

I'm arguing against the idea that the sport would die or decline if the pay-per-view model was reserved only for the premier world championship 'Super-Fights', and against the idea that the likes of Povetkin and Whyte being on PPV will somehow grow the 'grassroots' of boxing.
I find those arguments pretty weak, to put it mildly.
It's far more likely that the expansion of the pay-per-view model is contributing to most boxing become increasingly "niche" and/or appealing to a casual base of fans who are being encouraged to "buy this fight !" but being alienated/dicouraged from actually following or respecting boxing as a sport.
