I agree. They get paid what people are willing to pay.
The problem is, in boxing, the pay-per-view system does nothing to build the sport, as you've been arguing for.
It just turns boxing into a carnival of sideshows, where punters are pulled into buying the latest PPV event.

You're comparing the likes of Dillian Whyte with sportsman who've had long careers at the TOP of their sports.
Jordan Speith has achieved #1 on the Golf tour, he's won major tournaments.
Venus Williams won several major tournaments, was #1 for ages. Her and her sister are legitimate sporting MEGA STARS.
And in both the golf and tennis cases, a lot of that net worth is from endorsements, not from direct sport earnings.

Dillian Whyte is a British-level heavyweight boxer, a routine contender, not a world elite boxer by any stretch.
I don't begrudge him his money but I question why you think anyone at his level should be entitled to it.

bbjc, Speith, Williams and Davis (and other sports persons) are worth what they are worth due to building a brand that attracts endorsement and honing their ability which returns prize money, not due to selling and duping fans into forking out to get behind (another) a paywall.

I lot of these have high worth because they start and invest their money in businesses. Venus and her sister are prme examples.

If SKY subscribers genuinely want to see boxing enough to buy the pay-per-views then it makes no sense to conclude that they don't value boxing enough for SKY to invest in paying boxers to fight on non-PPV.

And remember it's not just the broadcasting companies that invest, it's the advertisers.
They even squeeze ad breaks in between rounds.

The pay-per-view isn't about lack of interest or investment, it's about promoters and the marketers playing boxing fans for "suckers" and running a sideshow-like racket, instead of trying to build and develop professional boxing into a respectable structured sport.

    End of argument right here.

Lets be honest if people like Hughie Fury can get 3m viewers on channel 5 then there is enough interest. That is nearly 3 times more than what Sky get for darts, granted its not terrestrial TV.

Boxing fans have their own rankings of elite but if your in or around the top ten in your weight class in the whole world...you are an elite sportsman i m afraid.

How many people are in the world? How many tried boxing? Out of all these people you,ve became in the top ten in the whole world in your weight class....you are pretty much an elite sportsman.

People spin everything negatively nowadays because deep down we all are very negative people but the reality of it is....dillon whyte is and should be classed as an elite athlete.

It's worth noting that a lot of these online net worth estimates are complete guesswork and are wildly inaccurate. Some sources have Serena Williams' net worth between 200 and 230 million US Dollars, which is laughable. Serena Williams has been a professional tennis player for 25 years and has enjoyed some of the most lucrative deals with Puma, Nike, Wilson, JP Morgan, Gatorade, Beats and many more. This is on top of nearly 100 million in prize money. Outfitters like Nike pay lesser athletes 8-figure sums to represent their brand over as little as 3 or 4 years, so the likes of Serena Williams will have enjoyed eye watering sums. Anyway, most top level athletes will earn more from endorsement than participation commission, appearance fees or prize money. To elaborate on what nurological rightly said, it doesn't even take a huge athlete to be wise with their money, if their plan is to earn even more. You could work as a road sweeper and save enough to invest if your circumstances allowed. A lot of these boxers will be clueless with their hedonism and probably don't realise that if they were a bit wiser, they'd be able to enjoy even more material wealth.

bbjc, if Eddie Hearn was interested in investing in boxing, then why hasn't Matchroom invested in the grassroots infrastructure? I can't help but feel that this is an elephant in the room.

Look down the list of most sports....these guys are all millionaires. Snooker players worth millions. Go down and see the tenth best tennis player in the world...i dont know who it is...but i bet hes a millionaire. Even darts Now who,s telling dillon whyte hes getting 100,000 for it. Its 100 percent not only superstars making excellent money. Soon we,ll be sating boxings easier than darts.

Boxing would be the biggest mugs game in the world. Where if your lucky enough to get to the top...you end up with about 100,000 a fight....and everyone else less succesful pretty much needs a full time job. Boxing would mainly become a part time sport if we done what people are wanting.

Dillan whytes had a hard career....anyone that fights chisora x 2...parker...joshua and povetkin cant be described as not having a hard career.

Ppv 100 percent does grow the sport. Even just tonight about ten different guys will benefit from that money. Same again the next one. And the next one. All guys that would be totally struggling to make ends meet. The marketing that they spend on it. I m watching the build up the now....i,ve got to know boxers i didnt know even boxed. Now after watching them i m intrigued to see how they get on tonight. Without the budget...that marketings not really worth their while.

I dont get how you think i m saying eddies doing it for the good of the sport. I think hes passionate about the sport tbf. But eddies just putting some of the money your investing into the ppv into a marketing budget...to sell more ppv,s and build his other fighters...which in turn builds british boxing because hes got a lot of fighters.

I dont get why anyone expects eddie or anyone to invest their own money for the good of the sport. Hes a businessman looking to make money....why would he not be. Tbf he does seem to have a massive passion for boxing.

Regardless tho bearing in mind its not possible without ppv....hes now letting you have the option to buy the fight or not....the other option is you dont get a choice the fights not made.

Yeah because as someone said their heavily endorsed sports. Boxing isnt on the same level in terms of endorsements hence why its to be almost self funded.

If snooker and darts players can become millionaires through Sky TV coverage without Box Office then there is no excuse for the sport of boxing.

There is simply no justification for charging subscribers extra money for Box Office Sports which they have already paid for.

Tonight is being billed as a huge fight when it is an average British level fighter versus an old man.

No thanks fella, I am watching the BT Sport Card.
