Its not about if i support the decision tho.

Its about can the fight be made on free to air tv or not. People need to put their emotions to one side.

The problem is no ones making money putting that fight on free to air tv. They,d just probably shelf that till kelly was more a household name. Or they might be lucky enough to get selected to use some of the sky sports budget on.

Kelly would probably be stuck fighting low level guys that are cheap to get over. Then fight the guy when hes got a big enough profile.

Look at froch or kell brook. Frochs break was the wbss. Kell wasted his best years cause no one would fund a top level fight for him. Look at hatton or warrens wbo runs...they went on far too long. Warren couldnt afford better opposition till he could land a big name. Went on for years. That wasnt always frank just avoiding everyone. Even the top guys we,re struggling to get decent opposition.

We,re stuck fighting the same level of opposition apart from the very lucky few. Ppv gets fights madd that wouldnt be made. Otherwise it,ll stagnate. Its as simple as that really.

What do you mean.. "who will make these types of fights", hopefully nobody, a 42 year old recovering from Covid who could barely stand upright, a debutant who was so fluffed up and hyped it was hugely embarrassing, Fabio Wardley as a chief support... THIS ISNT MAYWEATHER VS PACQUAIO OR FURY VS AJ FFS.

But the fact is Every promoter could make these fights, they are just not worth the money Eddie is paying, Eddie has massively inflated the worth of these fights and his fighters to benefit himself in my opinion.

It's already been mentioned, Whyte went around the world after an argument with Eddie, he went looking for another promoter and when he realised what he is worth.. he went straight back to Hearn.

Eddie says openly that he gets huge pleasure from getting fighters like Dave Allen a few houses, this isn't a charity, it's a sport, Dave Allen never won a British title, European or anything worth winning but he was Eddies little pet project.

Same with David Price, he loses, quits or gets knocked out again and again and is then churned out again, he has never won a European title, never even fought for a world title but gets put on PPV events and it is being said it will be Hughie Fury Vs David Price on another PPV event.

For example, Should we just make every football match in the Championship, League One, Two PPV so players in those division can get houses? Get cars and earn more money?

Why not? Because going by your logic, If Sky say it's worth it and it's now PPV then it is, and we should, just accept it, you know and I know it's just abusing the loyal fans, in a pandemic also, its outrageous and the sooner it ends the better.

Are you drunk? What do you mean "it's nothing to do with Hearn"? Hearn is the one who has a deal with Sky to deliver a certain number of PPV events every year, Hearn also has a deal with DAZN, he is making these fights, promoting these events.

The idea Hearn is somehow not really involved and just doing us all a favour is delusion at its finest.

Hearn needs PPV fighters so Hearn has a job to convince people like you (and he is obviously doing a decent job) Fabio Wardley is a fine chief support on a PPV event.. it's in his interest, and like I said, the more his fighters earn.. the more he earns.

You're wrong, Yes, Whyte Vs Povetkin IS being being funded, by Sky Sports, By DAZN, advertising, the only thing they haven't got is a live gate, nothing else has changed.

So Hearn is actually getting MORE than he was a few years ago before he made a deal with DAZN.

Nobody is jealous or doesn't want fighters to earn, but earn what they are WORTH.

Jealous of success? What is Whytes success? A British title? Or the money? He hasn't even fought for a European Title, hasn't fought for a world title. So what is "success" in your opinion?

Also ITS NOT AND WOULD NOT BE FREE TO AIR, people pay for a Sky Sports subscription, pay a subscription to DAZN. Don't pretend these event are not funded or paid for, that's what those deals are all about, that's what the advertising is all about.

If you want to pay then fine, but if I want to complain that's fine.

I really don’t understand the argument, it’s ridiculous.

    If Sky and Matchroom say the fight costs £20, it costs £20. It’s completely your own right, choice and decision whether you want to pay that or not. The decision tree is simple;

    - Do you want to watch the fight?

    - Are you willing to pay £20 for it?

If your answer to any of those questions is no - don’t pay for it. If someone else answers yes to those questions, that’s their choice too and you have no say in the matter. None. Nein. Zilch, Zero. Just like someone can’t force you to buy the PPV.

    This is true. Of course.

But the subsequent argument was around whether the expansion of the "pay per view" model has been good or bad for the sport as a whole.
Most here think it's been more bad than good.
A few argue that it helps "grow the sport" and even that it's necessary.

To be fair, on paper Povetkin-Whyte 2 was a decent and somewhat interesting fight.
You're right of course, it's nowhere near "premier league" of boxing.

It's just an ordinary decent international heavyweight match-up between a couple of run-of-the-mill contenders (one of them several years past his sell by date), that's been elevated to "eliminator" status through the usual politics of boxing.

The idea that it's a special fight that naturally demands considerable financial investment is baffling.

I knew people would slate his win and blame it on COVID hahahaha

    LAUGHABLE.

The man won the rematch fair and square give him credit where it's due. He was winning the first fight before getting caught with a shot that would've dropped a horse.

The fight only went 4 rounds, are you telling me COVID really had an effect...... if it went late and Povetkin was blowing out his arse then you might have some form of hope when clutching at straws.

If he wasn't fit he shouldn't have been fighting. Whyte beat the man put in front of him in and he moves on.

Most tennis players earn a set amount depending on what they achieve against the field. Prize money is distributed according to where you place in the tournaments.
Tennis rankings and earnings are based on results and activity, and they all play each other. To get ranked number 15 in tennis you have to travel a lot, play a lot, and perform consistently, against the best.
Tennis players don't turn down matches with the world's number 1.

So you're saying any fight between any boxers "top ten or thereabouts" should create paydays in the millions ?

If a fighter fights 3 or 4 times a year and makes £50,000 a fight (to use one of your lower figures), he's making a very good living. It's not chicken feed at all. If he saves and invests wisely, yeah, he might be millionnaire or better at the end of his career. Win, lose or draw.
If he's winning those fights, beating 'world ranked' men or thereabouts, he gets a chance to fight for the championship after a year or two, which will be a considerable amount more, and might be millions. And if he wins that, he could get tens of millions in his next fight.

This is the way boxing always was. The incentive was to there to get the title shot. Contenders could make a lot of money too but they still regarded the title shot as the keys to the real bonanza.

Nowadays, you are saying, they should all be very rich, and if they want to turn down 6 or 7 million £ title shots, they ought to be entitled to million+ £ purses to fight in an over-hyped second-tier merry-go-round, getting knocked out by 40-year-old has beens along the way.
You've made that position clear. You see it as progress.
Whereas I say it's bad for the sport.

    Why ?
What would Dillian Whyte do ?
I guess he would retire, because he's already so rich, he can afford to.
But rewind his bank account a few years, what would Whyte do if he was still on £50,000 or £100,000 purses ?
He'd fight. And earn a bloody good living. And when that offer came in to fight AJ on PPV again, for the belts, he would've bitten Eddie's hand off to have that fight.

Of course mate its everyones free choice, but its a problem for a) people who cant afford it b) if its just that more and more fights whatever the level are sold on a PPV basis, it shrinks the audience overall over time. I dont think thats good for the sport, especially young kids getting into it who dont have that purchasing power and have to rely on whether or not their parents buy it

They were fighting on ITV1. On Saturday nights.
    Free to view.

Matt Skelton and Danny Williams drew 4.1 million viewers on ITV1.
Matt Skelton and Michael Sprott 2 was shown with Khan-Limond on ITV1 and viewed by 3.5 million.
493,000 even watched Michael Sprott KO Audley Harrison on ITV4, free to view.
    And several more.

It's hard to argue that no one outside hardcore boxing fans heard of them when they were availabe on Saturday night on main ITV channels.
They were never big names like Joshua, Bruno, Lewis, Fury etc. .... and don't deserve to be.
But neither is Dillian Whyte, and doesn't deserve to be either.

Is the £50,000 a covid19 pandemic purse estimate or are you talking about in normal times ?

Okay @bbjc , all those hungry rough street kids, ragamuffins like Dillian Whyte, they'd bin the idea of professional boxing if they thought they could ONLY make a few hundred grand a year in boxing if they're good.
Is that your argument ? Really ?

Honestly mate....to be a sportsfan we,ve got to be a bit deluded at times. I m as bad as anyone tbh. But at least when i come on and say joshuas not great hes a bit average or david price is a potato with arms and legs....i log off knowing full well i m a very deluded individual...its part of the fun of being a sportsfan. Your problem is you dont realise how deluded you really are.

"Povetkins just a 42 year old geriatric that can barely stand up etc"....no wonder you value the fighters the way you do.

The reality of it is povetkins had to become the best fighter in his club...then in his hometown...then his city...then in his whole country for his weight class. I,ll write it down again...povetkins had to battle it out to become the best fighter in his weight class in the whole of russia. Do you know the population of russia? Do you know how hard that is...and how few people become that great. One person. Hes not stopped there tho....hes went on to become one of the best fighters in europe. Again hes not stopped there...hes went further and became one of the best ten fighters in his whole weight class in the whole world. Since a young boy...hes took beatings and gave beatings to get to that level. Hes sacrificed everything to get there. Hes also probably not been paid that well to get there either. And also regularly had 18 stone men hitting him in the brain a lot.

His big reward...he might get 50 grand to fight another one of them guys that became one of the top ten fighters in the world. Thats the most prestigious division as well...probably the most dangerous one to boot.

One of yous said...we,re not here to buy people houses. And yet, you all have houses. Or most of us do anyway...we fund it through our jobs. But Now we dont want these fighters having houses. How dare they.

Honestly log off the computer...go down to your local boxing gym and join it. Then come back and tell me these guys at the very top are worth 50 grand a pop. The very best of the best. Its a hard game mate. Outside the lucky few...not many make a living out of it. Most of them end up getting the enthusiasm for boxing beating out of them in the end.

If the top guys are getting 50 grand or 100 grand what are the rest getting?

The other sports are better funded because they,ve got bigger fan bases. Gary anderson a darts player worth 6 million. That ruplev guy 9th best tennis player worth say 20 million. His record is something like 143 wins and 91 losses. Thats not the elite or the best of the best. Lee westwood golf worth 40 million. Think hes about 20th in the world. These are just random guys. Pick any of them. Pick other sports if you want. And none of them are superstars...i ve never heard of ruplev. The problem is...boxing doesnt have that funding....not enough people fund it because not enough people have the same interest. No promoters are consistantly putting on top challenger v top challenger....their not putting them on for a reason...they dont make financial sense. Probably why the american promoters sent dillian back to eddie with his tail between his legs as you put it. If it was just all down to eddie being greedy...andy ruiz wouldnt have fought 30 times only having one named opponent before joshua. Or wilder wouldnt have fought 46 puddings before ortiz. Or ortiz wouldnt have fought no one till wilder.

Its all the arguments a lot of people make as well.

Why arent challengers fighting other challengers...heres the real answer...it doesnt really make financial sense for anyone.

Would you let your son go down the route of boxing where the lucky ones get 50 grand a fight and the rest get beating up....probably never to be the same again. I know a few guys thats happened to btw....and they we,re very good amatuers.

There's something not quite right with this bbjc character. Those posters that don't mind paying £20 for a Saturday Fight Night card while I disagree with them I can understand that mindset, they just want to see the boxing, fine. But bbjc what is he getting out of his relentless defending of anything Eddie does ??

He isn't a troll and I don't believe he's a Matchroom employee so what are his motivations ?? Is he a failed wannabe accountant ?? Or does he dream of being an entrepreneur of some sort and has made Eddie his inspiration ??
    It's all very odd.
