Wasn't able to find a reference to it but there's an article about a study that was conducted a few years ago that stated that boxers gain more weight in the offseason than any other athlete; many becoming obese in less than half a year. I believe the study tracked olympic boxers, especially those with injuries, who (for whatever reason) took long breaks from training once competition was finished.

In 03 I dropped from the 230s to compete at 185.
Within 6 weeks I was back in the 220s - wasn't able to train, bad headaches from getting KOed.

That's wrong man,it's quite the opposite, they train hard and restrict themselves for big periods from all the nice things of cuisine so after camp and the fight they dig in and get overweight. It's normal, not healthy but normal.

No excuse for the lazy heavyweights...

But, you try boiling yourself down to skin and bone to make weight! For most guys that means going to a reeeeeaal strict diet on top of the training regime.... Like super-model, starvation type ****! No fats, no junk food, no sweets, no booze or other bad habits... and for some guys, even no *****!

So its no surprise the first thing some guys wanna do after a big fight is EAT, (whatever they want) DRINK (whatever they want) F--- (whenever they want) and just relax a bit after the physical and mental strain leading up to it.

Then they get to liking that life a little too much... don't want to get their ass back in the gym and back on that diet train. ... And it dosn't take long to pack on the blubber when your body has been in starvation mode for the pevious couple months.

Next thing they know..... they're a fat slob.

Calzaghe doesn't get that overweight does he? Sure he puts on a few pounds but he doesn't appear fat...

What about Naseem Hamed...he' nearer the heavyweight limit than featherweight lol, He's retired...but he's younger than Calzaghe!

I don't think so, but getting money and fame and having a big appetite can negate any career.
