i find it very strange and disapointing that philipino americans, mexican americans, and puerto rican americans would rather support and root for fighters from the their homeland over their very own fighters in america. just like when De La Hoya fought Chavez Sr. and im betting that mexican americans would have also rooted for Canelo over Ortiz if they fought. its the same with most immigrants including philipinos. is it some sort of self hate? are they ashamed to be american? or are they just trying to prove their loyalty to their homeland?
Pretty much. And it's understandable. Pacquiaos been in the game longer, has made a far bigger impact, and is repping his country/heritage far more visibly. Thats not saying Donaire doesnt rep the Philippines. Just that you dont see him building schools, roads, hospitals, becoming a congressmen, etc, like Pacquiao is doing. Filipinos are naturally going to love him more.
Not strange or disappointing at all. To them, those fighters from homelands are signifying their natural heritage far stronger, and so their support for them is likely to be fuelled quite passionately. Pretty much all ethnic groups are like that. Not just Mexicans, Puerto Ricans or Filipinos. Italians seem to do it, too. Here in the UK we get Nigerians, Jamaican, Pakstanis, Indians, etc, that do the same.
the thing with pacquiao is, even when he was making lesser than what donaire is making now, i read articles where he would give rice, canned meats and small cash to the poor in his hometown after each win.
I reckon it's because he is not as special as Manny. Donaire just doesn't have courage to slug it out toe-to-toe. That's why Manny is loved more.At least with Manny, he is not as flash or skilled. But he comes to bring it.
when you read articles like this, then you understand why. http://www.secondsout.com/columns/thomas-hauser/manny-pacquiao-a-fighter-for-the-ages
Your right he never asked for catchweights, but he still ACCEPTED them. As far as the work he did below 147 he's an awesome fighter man, I still give him credit for Hatton tho Hatton was recently ko'd, but Pacman's greatness not questioned there. Pac beating Bradley that's subjective first time I saw it I thought Pacman won 11 rounds to 1, but after rewatching it Bradley won. It's simply just a weird fight to score and hard to score because both are so fast and Bradley is featherfisted, but that he outlanded and punched with Manny it is undeniable. Of course I have respect for Manny, let me rephrase that, actually before the Marquez rubber match and Bradley fight I had more respect for Donaire, but tho I think he lost to Jmm and Bradley Manny has gained my respect just for facing these beasts because if you take Floyd out the picture Marquez and Bradley 140 and under are still among the best and maybe not to casual fans, but many hardcore fans like myself always knew Jmm and Bradley would be legit threats to Pacman and that's what happened. Hell, even at 147 or close to it they are still elites tho clearly Jmm is not a natural 147lber.Truth is 147 by the time Manny started fighting there wasn't a strong division with Margarito and Cotto recuperating from brutal ko's and Mosley on the downslide. I give Manny credit for Clottey tho, a solid WW.
He had Marquez winning the 2nd. I haven't heard him say anything about the 3rd tho, but i'm sure he's scared to give his honest opinion, considering all the **** Arum has put him through already.
he is growing on me. he doesn't have the same effect as pac, espinosa or even penalosa but he is gaining popularity. he has some major endorsements in the philippines now and is trying to walk into pac's footsteps by making a movie.
I'm proud of him because he's 100 per cent Filipino and he's on his way to greatness. I don't care about his wife or his family or what he does outside of boxing, I am more interested in him as a great boxer.
His parents are both Filipinos. He was born in the Philippines. He studied in the school where Pacquiao went to.
