No. I am a BOXING fan. I am not a FIGHT fan. Swinging and knocking guys out is the base form of fighting. Doing it with technical grace is Boxing. Just because you are wearing gloves doesn't mean you are Boxing. What don't I like? I think he is crude, walks into punches, can't manage distance, and uses brawn not brains to take out opponents. I like a tough inside fighter too. If a guy moves forward, slipping, cutting off the ring, working the body, etc... Good stuff. That isn't Kirkland. What is there to like? His "street" story? Ishida isn't protected? Right. Boxing experts like you know Japan has the toughest comp at 154-160. Ishida fought a great fight, but he was there to lose. They even went so far as to get a guy with allegedly no pop to protect your "wolf" from the KO. So the joke was on them, but make no mistake they planned a joke.
He'll definitely be back. Fighters who kayo of hot prospects tend to earn at least one other HBO payday (Vera's a prime example of this). It's very possible that we could see Ishida vs Lee at some point this year, and that's a fun fight because Lee is there to be hit, but has shown some ability to recuperate that Kirkland seems to lack right now. (at least that was the case in the McEwen fight.)
Even if HBO doesn't bring him back, maybe we can get him on a Friday Night Fights? I'd like to see him get some TV time, so I can see a little more of this dude.
HBO didn't even have a translator on hand for Ishida. that's how sure they were that Kirkland was gonna take him down. (they found somebody eventually)
of course. he deserves it. Obviously boxing politics will probably freeze him out of the picture for a while but he deserves a shot against bigger names to help him work his way up.
And Ishida is 35. He's not getting any younger, so he has to strike while the iron is hot, and secure his big payday very soon. And pagara, who is only starting to get a reputation, isn't marketable enough for that fight to happen...especially since he's currently a full two divisions below Ishida. That's not a slag on Pagara, who may well have the best dark-horse candidate for KOTY with his one punch demolition of Sumba. But this fight ain't happening for a while because it's not the type of fight that truly benefits either man, and because of the weight disparity btx the fighters.
The fight said more about Kirkland than it did Ishida. There isn't even any footage of Ishida on YouTube and the Japanese are really good about putting footage up of their fighters. Yet, there is none. No way does he deserve to be in there with Martinez.
