uh, I think thats the point. Boxing should be more like football in the sense that the best should be competing against the best as often as possible.

I know it was reported he went as low as 147 in training, but how legit was that? Why was the fight @ 150 if he can make 147?

They would have to totally revamp the sport. Everything would have to change. They way the sport is setup now, fighters are going to go after the biggest paydays. It would be pretty much impossible to set boxing up like pro football.

or God forbid more fighters should have the mentality of Shane and actually want to fight the best.

No it doesn't. Teams in pro football aren't allowed to chose who they play. The sport isn't setup that way. The comparison makes no sense as the sports are nothing alike,

That's all good and well, but it's ridiculous to ask people to act totally contradictary to human nature. It would be like saying that corporations should cut the salaries of executives and pay non executives more money out of the goodness of their heart. It would be great if they did, but most of them aren't going to do it on their own.

You're missing the point, it wouldn't have to be a league set up, but anyway.

It would be like the Olympics putting the competitor from the home nation in the finals of boxing, judo, and wrestling, because after all they would draw more people.

Or it would be like allowing one fighter to choose who he gets to fight for the gold medal.

If the best don't fight the best, there is no validity to the competition.

I get the point, but you're forgetting that boxing consists of a bunch of independant contractors. Pro football, the olympics and pretty much every other sport/competition is not setup that way. Because of this huge difference, you can't compare boxing with these other sports/competitions.

or a fighter should actually want to test himself against the very best, like Shane and Margarito. These type of fighters should be celebrated more, maybe others would follow

If a fighter claims to be the biggest name and best boxer in the sport, it really shouldn't matter who he fights to get the big money. HE SHOULD be the one bringing in all the money and fans he needs. Except here, that so-called 'money' man still needs someone to do it for him...again.

Margarito is a bad example. He's 30 years old and is still looking for that big payday. His career decisions are geared towards him getting those fights. Margo lobbied to get Hoya to fight him this May. So clearly, you can see what his intentions are.

Shane really isn't known as a money guy, but he definately seeks the biggest money fights. He turned down a third fight with Hoya after getting a controversial decision in the second fight over money. He turned down a fight with Floyd in November of 2006 because of money, he also scoffed at earlier fights with Floyd because Floyd wasn't a big enough name.

It takes two to tango Lance, you know this. Fighters can't just snap their fingers and do big numbers.

Then maybe they shouldn't demand around 20 mill for their services UNLESS they can bring most of that in themselves. All that high demand does is ensure:

    1. Only a fight w/ DLH is possible
    2. Not much money for any sort of decent undercard

Floyd w/o DLH or Hatton probably doesn't draw that much more then Pac or Cotto.

Overpricing one's actual worth is the same as pricing yourself out in my book. After what Mayweather got paid for Hatton, DLH I & II, think anyone else will be able to pay him the same? Think Floyd will LOWER his purse?
