I've been of a mixed view of Tyson. At times he comes across as almost humble and he respected the past HW champs going back to Dempsey. Other times he acts like a world class jerk. But lets not be fooled - he's a guy from the streets who made a big name/fame/notoriety for himself in a brutal sport. Athletes are also part of the entertainment business. Look how many messed up people that produces. There's no doubt he had issues dealing with women. Then again the powers that be use women to entrap/take down not only successful men but the average Joe. As for his fanboys, as people have posted above, no question he's overrated. He could beat C & B HWs today but would lose to the top tier. Is Tyson the last generally recognized HW champ under 6 foot?
Tyson wa a bigger global star than Mayweather, here in the UK the average person in the street knew who Tyson was because his fights were shown on free TV here in the 80`s, PPV stopped Mayweather becoming a global superstar plus he never had Mike`s charisma.
floyd undoubtedly became a global superstar, but not on the level tyson was. rock up to your local pub to watch any MMA or boxing event for free.
Mike Tyson retired in 2005. 15 some years have passed and since that day boxing hasn't been able to produce a similar superstar. Tyson's prime was over 30 years ago and he's still more popular than anyone since that time. Mayweather isn't even in the same stratosphere as Mike Tyson. Only Muhammad Ali was a greater star than Mike Tyson. Tyson Fury, one of the heavyweight champions today as we all know, is named after Mike Tyson. That's how far reaching this man's influence is. Boxing never recovered from Tyson.
Tyson most certainly does not fall under "15 minutes of fame" The guy is a household name in every country and is instantly recognisable and has been for 35 years
This is kinda' my thought. I've heard in places like this forum that he was an evil little thug as a kid. Beating and robbing old ladies and stuff like that. Was never 10/10 on whether he's a ****** or not. Probably only the girl and he will ever know the truth. That said, seems like he's actually reformed and become a halfway decent person with age and getting beat down (literally and figuratively) a few times. What he says on his soapbox I have no interest in and would have no problem ridiculing his positions if he was posting in the Lounge. I try not to scrutinize celebrities that entertain me too closely. Better to see them through squinty eyes.
I think he's turned out to be a decent man. This is a kid who had an awful childhood, and surrounded himself with awful people in his career. He seems to have turned things around, he's aware of his need to be careful around enjoying the hype around him. He's treated like a god and it gets to his head. I believe in rehabilitation and he seems to have done some good work to sort himself out.
Mike Tyson, it's sad to say is irrelevant these days and I think that is what hurts him the most. He is still being used by people who monetise him anyway they can for a quick buck. What is nice to see is that he got on top of his ego and has came to terms with his past. Good luck to him I hope he can keep his mind healthy.
He sells more PPVs on the retirement circuit than the current crop of P4P divas. What's sad to say is that he's still relevant as a fighter.
He's human and very open concerning a lot of things and **** ups in his past. The issue some people have is that he has a forum and soapbox that allows all of his thoughts and musings to be critiqued. Agree with what you agree with and ignore what you don't. This is what we do with damn near everyone we come into contact with anyway.
