I'm in the mood to watch some classic fights so this is a good suggestion...I'll score it this afternoon.
The reason this fight was rarely mentioned as being razor close controversial is because Shavers was never known to be a guy looking for a decision win. His style and reputation were for knock outs and Ali was one of the greatest boxers ever. I think Shavers has never claimed to have won, he failed by his own standards. I think a draw would have been a fair result. I think he deserved that at least as much as Jimmy Young did. Anyway Ali didn't deserve to lose the title here, it was too close.
I just watched it and scored it 145-143 for Ali. I should note that I typically score more even rounds than most judges do. I don't like the concept that a lot of judges seem to have in which they feel a winner must be chosen for every round. Generally, if I don't immediately have a winner in my mind when the round ends, I'll score it even. Anyway, here is what I've got. 1. Ali 2. Shavers 3. Even 4. Shavers 5. Ali 6. Even 7. Ali 8. Shavers 9. Ali 10. Ali 11. Ali 12. Even 13. Shavers 14. Shavers 15. Ali
