Does having an Iron Chin shield a fighter from brain damage?

Hear me out. Many fighters with ATG iron chins have held up A LOT better than others, despite the amount of damage they've absorbed. Chuvalo, Holyfield and Foreman are all pretty coherent despite all of the damage that they took in their careers. Chuvalo and Holyfield slur their words a bit, but are still fairly coherent, especially when compared to glass jawed fighters who have take more or less of the same amount of punishment. I think having an iron chin partially protects the brain. Discuss.

Sustained damage typically makes it worse, but there are rare guys that can maintain their senses despite having been hammered throughout their career. Being knocked out is the body's defense mechanism.

 

It allows one to sustain more punishment than they should. Do you think Amir Khan will end up punch drunk? Probably not because he only takes one good shot per fight. Ali on the other hand was fighting way past his best and because of his chin and pride was taking sustained beatings, e.g. against Holmes. Another example is gman who took some big shot's against Julian Jackson, a pfp punchers and one punch line artist. Look at how his career ended? He took a knee, didn't even go down. That was sad.

Referees should be protecting boxers better in mismatched fights.

 

Guy's like Hagler and Duran are coherent as **** and speak perfectly despite all the damage that they endured.

 

I once read in Sports Illustrated that soccer players, because of heading the ball, show more signs of brain damage than swimmers. I imagine taking tons of punches off your skull is worse than heading a ball.

 

Also aren't there studies that show getting knocked out cold is easier on your brain than getting hit over and over. I feel like someone did a study comparing MMA and Boxing in this manner saying MMA was in some ways healthier because in MMA you are more than likely to be stopped by a single blow than taking 100 or more shots in a boxing match.

 

you have 15-25 minutes with grappling thrown in the mix versus 36 minutes of nothing but punches by a guy who specializes in punches - smaller gloves do produce more immediate and pointed damage that can produce quicker knock outs and limit the amount of rattling around in the brain. The deaths are usually from those long beatings like the Mancini Kim fight and even the Levandar Johnson affair where the concussive force was not enough to produce a clean knock out but the brain had to undergo repeated trauma.

Not to mention that most of the guys in the UFC are just not great strikers and they have made things like dropping elbows illegal - way more strain on joints, way less strain on the brain.

 

This is going to sound messed up, but higher cognitive functions to begin with will limit brain damage. Even if the capacity of the brain is rapidly affected by trauma, an intelligent person will be less damaged than someone who is already operating at minimum linguistic and comprehensive parameters to begin with. Thus, a person with a high iq or otherwise mentally talented individual, even though he may be knocked out easily, will show less effects immediately of brain damage, with less verbal repercussions, though his mental ability may also be affected by the trauma.

Vitali and Vladimir Klitschko will have no brain damage as they rarely get hit and are the biggest punchers out there as well, along with their superior boxing skills........
