He will get more time in the media now I think. I went to a pub in Manly and it was packed... first time i've seen that for a vic fight outside the casino and scruffy's etc
Many of that 5 times as many people will be watching in the hope that he loses - as UnAustralian as that is - Mundine has bought that on himself. Mind you they will still have to pay for the priviledge of hoping to see him lose - all gladly banked by Mundine Inc.
I think it is to be expected. Vic is only an adopted aussie. Isn't a media personality, isn't particularly fluent with his english. As well as this, he fights in the lower weight classes, which are generally more unknown. If it were a born and bred aussie, fighting at middleweight getting the wins that Vic has been, i can guarantee they would be starting to get a bit of a following no question.
Kostya also called himself Australian and didn't bring the Russian flag into the ring. I'm not having a go at Vic at all, but little things like that probably add up.
Kostya was a champion for ten years and I think the general public were much more into boxing back then... Vic has only been champ for a few and lost in between reigns. Give it time - he will become more popular if he keeps winning. People will catch on to him
Bloody airports. It's dearer to park at the ****ers than to fly somewhere., & that's if you can find a space close enough that you don't need a cab to get to the doors. Wouldn't it be good if they had a reception area in a non-flying section near airports where welcoming crowds could congregate without jamming these joints up & paying through the nose. Hope Vic gets a good roll-up. He deserves it. Just on his nationality, I've got no problem with him showing loyalty to his Armenian friends & fans. Here in Oz, we have a squillion international sporting greats. Not the case for Armenians. It doesn't have to be "all of not at all" for mine. I don't mind sharing him, so to speak. Good on him. Just one final thing tho, he wants to **** his english teacher off, he could finish up doing a Bill Clinton (I said "Hold my calls & sack my cook")
I have respect for Vic carrying his Armenian flag with pride. My heritage (Slovenian & Croatian) is from countries thats people were suppressed for many decades too, like Armenians would have been in the former USSR. They are now a full fledged country & it means a hell of alot to them.
And power to him. But if you're asking the yobbo Aussie boys down at the club why they don't know who he is, it probably doesn't help. I've heard Kostya say "I'm proud of my Russian heritage, but I'm Aussie." It doesn't bother me in the slightest one way or another, but to many members of the public, it seemingly does.
I think Vic using the Armenian angle has helped his career imensely in the U.S...I dont think its hurt him down here, not more so than the other factors involved but I agree with Ippy your casual bogan fan would not understand it and it certainly doesnt further his career like it does with the larger Armenian community in the states. I actually found about 4 or 5 guys around me at the pub were going for Arce because they thought he was the one who fought out of Oz..And they thought Vic's name was Ruben.
Yes it annoys me a lot, what Vic has achieved is unbelievable. When he became the first guy to unify the division we should have given him a coming home parade, but instead the guy gets 5 people showing up at the airport and a mere 10 seconds on Sports Tonight. I blame the media for not giving Vic more exposure, if they did, he would be a lot more well known. This would at least educate the idiotic bogan at the pub. It just annoys me that the average guy in the pub thinks Mundine-Taylor is a bigger fight and has more significance than Vic-Arce (which has huge significance on an international scale). And to really know how sad it is here, Vic is now getting a lot more respect internationally and is a lot more well known in the US, than he is over here. U just gotta read the General forum to see this. It's sad to say that there is not a chance in hell that he would ever entertain a fight in his adopted homeland, cos it's just not worth it.
Maybe a big fight here, touted as an undisputed title fight is just the attention that Vic and Australian boxing need... The lack of big live fights in Australia - Local and international - is one of the biggest reasons it's fallen off the map here. When the biggest live events are Mundine fights with football player undercards it's no wonder. I'd bet money a De La Hoya, a Hopkins, a Mosley, PBF or a Hatton fight would all sell out here if they held them in a reasonably sized venue (i.e. Not too big, but not too small) - it's got little to do with where they're from. It's their popularity and level of exposure to the average fan that sells the ppv's. I've seen a few quotes from Vic and Shaw saying it might happen down under - I know many casual fans that would pay for a good night of 'International' boxing. Let's hope it happens!
Your being very optimistic mate. I seriously doubt a Vic fight would sell out over here. He simply does not have the profile or the pubilicity that Kostya had, to make it worthwhile. I can't see Vic do what Kos did and sell out Melbourne Park. It's a shame cos Vic is at the same stage of his career where Kos was, . . . at the top of the tree as undisputed champ and P4P fighter. Although it would be great for us fans, unfortunately financially it just doesn't make sense. Aussie boxing is in a sad sad state, when we have a aussie bashing loud mouth fraud as our most recognised fighter in this country. Someone who really hasn't achieved anything compared to what Vic has. I just wish Aus would just get behind Vic a lot more than they have, but being in a smaller division doesn't help him.
