James Toney is not a top 100 heavyweight, but he's definitely an all-time top 50 P4P boxer.

Obviously my favorite hw is James toney, my favorite pound 4 pounder is Miguel Cotto. But that being said I guarantee Ruiz deserved the nod in the toney fight. I mean he brought it to him, didn't clinch, threw tons of shots, worked the body, got up from goofy/ off balance knock downs. He was sucking wind while jt was calmly losing the fight. That right hand counter was not that effective not was it a factor. Ruiz wanted it more he was more active and had essentially superb conditioning. It's too bad toney was on his way in to becoming in-house cause politically they were looking for a way to dispatch the man hugger Ruiz. It's a damn shame though as he showed he could outbox toney (mah fav hw)

He doesn't really have any great wins at the weight. Basically he was able to hang in there, which is impressive since he was a past his prime, often out of shape, middle weight. On the other hand, it was one of the weakest heavyweight eras, and Toney was racking up no contests, draws, and losses to guys that were not even at the top of that weak division. Had he ever stepped in with the giants he would have gotten beaten very badly. His best opponent was Peter, and the crude Peter proved to be too Nigerian, too slick!

Most average people who never made history on that level, just don't understand why this boxers stay in shape and insist on fighting until later years. Fres Oquendo definitely still has a few big fights in him, he should not be discouraged....Stay in top shape and come back to win a world championship. Manuel Charr is a great man himself, but he had a very good reason to not want to fight Fres Oquendo.

Even today we have to make Fres Oquendo a favorite vs (Daniel Dubious or Joe Joyce), those new kids, know they have no chance vs Fres Oquendo (many losses were actual close decisions). Lots of people relieved dropping him out of ranking without having to go to war in the ring, that tells you everything you need to know about Fres Oquendo. The WBA was forced to rank him for a good reason, the president of Chechenia mugged him of his title outside the ring, nobody was able to stop him since John Ruiz 2 decades ago and John Ruiz is not a normal fighter himself

My memories of the fight is Toney outboxing and countering Ruiz to fairly easy decission. You are right thought that Ruiz wasnt hugging
