i need to re-watch the khan v malig fight. I was in a house party trying to watch that ****.. Did Khan look spectacular/convincing?
I disagree....Ortiz has much better footwork than Khan...Ortiz looked very nimble and light on his feet on the undercard of the Khan Malignaggi fight, where Khan was flat footed, no bounce in his step and not particularly fast moving. His hands looked pretty sharp, though i thought Malignaggi won a round or 2 and Khans face was pretty battered looking after the fight...which is OK against feather fisted Malignaggi, but if Maidana connects flush even once on Khans weak chin, Amir will be taking an early sleep on the canvas.
His patience and selection of punches is what impressed me. Normally when Malignaggi is beaten, he is swarmed and over-powered by the bigger and aggressive guy (Hatton and Cotto). But against Khan, he was played at his own game and battered badly. As soon as he got use to Paulie's movement, Khan began pasting him with hard and accurate shots. That jab of his was sickening at times. It was snapping Paulie's head back real bad. BUT....Khan could afford to be confident and look as good as he did, simply because he didn't have to worry about anything dangerous coming his way. To me he still hasn't shown us any evidence that he is comfortable dealing with an aggressive power-house like Maidana. Which is why I was so eager for him to squeeze a fight in with Katsidis back in July. It would have prepared him well for this.
I don't think Khan has more than Ortiz, ultimately I think Ortiz will have a longer career in which he acheives more than Khan. The Ortiz we saw against Maidana was not the best of him, he'll learn so much from that defeat. Back to Khan, he can make this fight look easy if he maintains complete focus for 12 rounds but as we all know, one punch can turn it all around. I question his mentality, how is he going to cope when he's in the ring with such a big puncher? Comparing how he did against Kotelnik or Malignaggi won't give us any insight into how the Maidana fight will go because neither of them were big punchers. Logic dictates that Khan will win an easy UD but logic doesn't always play out as it should in boxing so my money is on a Maidana ko win, I think he will eventually get to that chin.
It's ridiculous just how overrated Maidana is...you'd think he was the second coming of JCC. Had Ortiz boxed smart and fought the right fight, he would've made Maidana look silly, stopped him and we wouldn't be having this conversation. Khan will box 6 figures around him come dec. 11th, my hope is we don't suddenly forget just what a 'monster' Maidana was going in and we give Amir his props. Khan and Ortiz are sort of on the same level physically. However Amir is levels ahead mentally. He has more resilience, bigger heart, more stomach for the fight and better adaptability. I never thought i would see a more dim/immature fighter than an early Amir Khan, till i saw and heard Victor Ortiz.
You hope he's still overrated if Khan beats him? You are saying Maidana is so overrated so by your logic Khan shouldn't get too much credit for beating him. Maidana has power but that's it, I don't hear anyone overrating him at all but it's not beyond the realms of possibilty that a limited fighter with power beats a better fighter with a **** chin.
You're missing the point. The same people who are overrating him now and saying he'll destroy Khan and Khan's career will be over after this, won't give him the credit when he wins and shows Maidana up for what he is. These same people will be saying, 'well, Maidana was made for him'.
I get your point but a lot of people who know Maidana's limitations will still make out like it's a brilliant win for Khan if he beats him, it works both ways. Still, I don't see many people overrating Maidana, as average as he is he could still ko Amir.
They're already saying that. After Khan disposed of Malignaggi and stated his desire to fight Maidana, there were quite a few...."How come Khan's getting the easier pick in Maidana?"....despite the fact that a few weeks before, those same people believed Maidana would shatter his glass-jaw.
I agree Ortiz would be the quicker on his feet and for using them to get on the inside, but Khan has the better footwork for maintaing distance effectively as it really is the only thing on his mind in terms of footwork. I think it will be the more suited kind of work for Maidana style than Ortiz's style of movement. Another thing I notice in the first fight before the **** hit the fan, Ortiz was very good at catching Maidana coming in something I can see Khan having a lot of joy with.
I think Khan and Ortiz are fairly similar in power but I give Amir the speed advantage. Both in hand and foot movement. Khan won't get drawn into a war like Ortiz and I feel if Ortiz was to rematch Maidana it would be a different story. This may sound crazy but I think Khan is going to look the puncher in this fight. His speed and movement coupled with Maidana's terrible footwork is going to IMO see Khan hit him and hurt him at will. I see the ref pulling Maidana out after 7 or 8 one sided rounds.
