Functional muscle is nice to have. There are certain people whom have a harder time building different muscle groups, certain people are more tone, etc, BUT honestly... If your a top level boxer who not only worksout like one, but also has the best nutritionists in the world... You should look the part somewhat.
Back when I didn't understand much I asked my boxing trainer at the time why do pro boxers look like this... He told me "Both could workout the same. One though chooses that he's going to eat properly... the other eats donuts, cakes, whatever he wants." This isn't always the case sure, but I'm sure a lot of it. Definition is mostly diet. You can run til you pass out, but if you go eat McDonalds right after that everytime, you probably aren't going to look as good as the guy who does the same as you and drinks a healthy shake afterwards and takes care of themselves.
I lift weights at a gym, and the trainers crack me up sometimes. They could actually be good at the class, actually aerobically fit, etc, BUT for a person who doesn't understand that would see them THEY WOULD NOT TAKE THERE CLASS! Who wants a overweight trainer telling them what to do? If I haven't worked out in 10 years, ate Cheetos, and drank Pop all day long, and I start a class with the trainer who looks worse than me I'd be like WTF?!

Over 40 years around boxing and boxers has taught me that too much muscle mass is a hinderance to good boxing. Some of my best boxers and heavy handed boxers were skinny as a stick. Great muscle tone, reflexes and solid technique rule in boxing. Too much muscle mass slows a fighter down and causes them to fatigue easier. That is why for 25 years in our gym we have never allowed weight lifting.

My son tells me back in ancient Greece they told 'some guy' to separate the sports into categories. He put boxing in the 'speed' category.

he was always made fun of for being a skinny little kid. He may not have a whole lot of outward muscle but everyone is seen how easily he can put someone's lights out.

hes an example.of why muscles dont equate to power. Naseem hamed was also not very muscly but had brutal power. then you have guys like timothy Bradley who look like action figures but cant knock the skin off a pudding. A strong core and technique is what generates power
