Floyd KO'd many fighters, and Big George couldn't put a dent in some fighters. As I said, it's relative. Some fighters are heavier hitters sure but there are many factors involved. Guys like Hearns and Pavlik never started out as heavy hitters, Marquez developed his power at an advanced age and so on. There's nothing mysterious about punching power, there's a lot of factors involved as well as your opponents ability to take a punch. There isn't a point of force you exert with your punch that crosses you over from 'not a puncher', to a 'puncher'. There are too many factors involved to call someone a singles hitter or a home run hitter, that's an overly simplistic and unrealistic way of looking at punching power.
The difference is George did NOT have the greatest technique where Floyd does and most of the fighters George faced ended up face down. Hearns was a "PUNCHER"...meaning he had the power to Knock a guy out cold if he landed. Steward was able to give his natural power a boost with teaching him how to properly throw a punch and Tommy also have great timing. Hearns was a great counter puncher too.....But his leverage was even greater due to how rangy he was. Therefore got additional leverage on his shots. Floyd's not that guy. There are "REAL PUNCHERS" and some he have good/decent power....and then there's guys who are just freaks of nature like Ed Valero. There are dynamics to this debate that aren't so cut and dry that folks who have been around the sport understand. Of course the aspect of timing, placement and technique have a valid place in this discussion but I know what John meant.
If he can keep this kind of pace for 12 rounds (or at least something close to that kind of pace) and hasn't got a bad chin he could be great. IF he has great stamina and an above average chin he is pretty damn hard to beat
Think "could be great" is pushing it, PP, but will go along with (if he doesn't run outta steam) "hard to beat," at best.
You're right but I don't mean great like ATG great but great like one of the very best at his weight and maybe (but jsut maybe) a decent (not great) p4p ranking
