Curry and Jones both finished their training at Birmingham City ABC where I was an amateur. Colin would come in and train from 2 till 4, (School wagged in the afternoon for a fortnight). Curry would train 5 till 7.
I watched their every move for 2 weeks and although I adored Jones and his manager, the great Eddie Thomas, I couldn't see how Colin could win. Curry gave no signals or triggers. He moved as naturally as water flowing downhill. He made it look easy.
We had some good pro's in that gym, (Tony Willis, Kostas Petrou, Lloyd Christie, Martin McGough. Lloyd and Martin actually sparred Curry). All of them picked Curry to win inside the distance.
It was a shame that Colin wasn't given the the chance to get on one of his famous rolls but Curry said in an interview a few years later, " He had one of the best left hooks I've ever seen. I said, no way is he hitting me with that hook. First chance I get "
Don Curry is, by far, the most talented Fighter I have ever seen close up.
For further viewing, Don's destruction of Italian bully, Nino La Rocca is a bit of a treat.

PS. Curry did all his training in a rubber suit and weighed in after each session. Fifteen months later, Lloyd Honeyghan battered the daylights out of him. It would seem dear old Eddie Thomas was only a year wrong. Jones would have eaten a weight weakened Curry.

Cracking post, LoadedGlove! Read a fair bit about Donald Curry over the years and I'm still not sure why he unravelled the way he did. I do know peak Curry is still a treat to watch all these years later. Like you said, he made a very difficult thing look easy.

Thank you autumn. It was the weight that did for Curry. He should have moved up straight after the McCrory fight.

I remember when Curry beat Jones, McCrory and La Rocca, all good opponents, for a time he looked like a fututre ATG, and then the Honeyghan disaster happened.

My heart went out to Jones that night. He was so upset when the doctor correctly stopped the fight

i still dont see anything that great about it. He ruled a division of non entities and never beat another superstar fighter.

He was destroyed by LH, McCallum, and Norris

I think Curry, at his best beats Honeyghan convincingly.

Lloyd would have been a hand full for anyone that night but I think a peak Curry would have beaten him. Maybe stopped him late.

I don't. Lloyd powered his way thru Curry's tight defense whereas colin just stayed in front on him with an occasional hook to the body. Don had never been truly tested and fooled many into believing he was an all time great

He failed his next big test too. This time he couldnt blame it on making weight

He also failed in his fight with Norris

Every time he had been tested by a big name talent, he came up short

The writers were stretching him way too far and I just was never convinced. His tko losses to top rated opposition only proves they were wrong all along

i dont uderstan what would make someone say " I think fighter A in his prime destroys fighter B" because fighter B destroyed his fighter...

Was not Curry just 25 yrs of age

One poster did bring up a good point which is that Curry had over 400 amateur fights which could have have shortened his pro career

Still, it looks to me that Lloyd was much more powerful than Curry.

let us not forget too that the Korean gave Curry a good test , lasting the full 15 and was nowhere the level of Lloyd. The more physical fighters are going to have greater success against Donald
