I was just trying to give Ruddock some credit.... He was able to pop a good jab--when he used it....... But, as he aged, he led with the "Smash" all too often.......... Ruddock was predictable after 1990.......... The KO over Michael Dokes in 1990 up in New York ruined Ruddock's development....... Not even Floyd Patterson could help Ruddock all that much........ Ruddock had a jab.... BUT! He oftened pawed with it..... Bad move...... Plus, he failed at times to retract it back to his jaw, as well...... See round 1 of "Lewis" of '92....... MR.BILLbbb
Absolutely. Donovan Ruddock would have been a far greater fighter with a better trainer. That sounds obvious, but I tend to think these days when we have high profile fighters lose a big fight, overzealous fans point the finger at the trainer...and a lot of the time I don't think that is the issue. In the case of Ruddock, though, I believe a more experienced trainer with pedigree could have seen the big Canadian at least capture an Alphabet.
Post Tyson Ruddock was finished. I was very much saddened by what happened to Dokes especially when Ruddock hit him with the "smash" when Dokes sagged on the ropes. Tyson back then had a very negative effect on some fighters. Suffice to say they were never the same again after the beating they took. Ruddock fought a large part of their second fight with a badly broken jaw. My hat was off to him as it was an awesome fight and saw Mike win on talent alone. But that fight was a clear indicator of Mike's demise compared to a few years earlier. Dam shame as that was also the eve of Holyfield Tyson prior to Mike getting incarcerated. To say i was pissed off at the time was an understatement.
What a great fight, I was 16 when this fight took place. This was before we could get ppv in our homes where I lived at the time so me and 3 of my boys all bought tickets and went down to the Show Me Center which is the local event center where our college plays hoops and where concerts and things are held. We watched the fight on a giant movie screen. I taped the fight on the replay the following week. I have watched this fight atleast 20 times, though not in over 7 or 8 years, but I still have it and might be popping it in again soon.. It was a great fight!! Mike hurts Razor, Razor gets up smiling, Razor comes back and has a strong round hurting Mike, back and forth action!! I agree that Mike clearly won the fight but also agree that the point deductions made it close. Razor became my guy after this fight, I really thought he was poised to win the title. I was convinced that he would beat lennox lewis that Halloween night back in '92 (I think) I told all my boys back then that Ruddock would be the Champ some day, I was crushed when he was destroyed by Lewis!! But I still thought hey he just got caught he can rebound from this, but as you know that was about it for Razor. I remember waiting for 2 years for him to fight again and then he fought Anthony Wade and he looked terrible, he dominated Wade over the distance but Prime Ruddock takes this guy out fast!! Then there was the Morrison fight which I went 2 in KC, being a fellow Missourian we made the drive up. Again Ruddock is beaten by a fighter who he would clearly beat at his best.. The guy had all the physical tools to be a Champ it just didn't happen for him, he was 2 intoxicated with his own power and that was one of his down falls, but you know if he would have been more of a boxer with a Razor jab fighting smarter I may not have been quite as enamored by him. I loved his go for broke style, his destroy or be destroyed attitude. Razor was one of my first favorite fighters and I enjoyed the ride!!
Tyson was not the "Tyson of Old" in this fight. That's for sure. He did however add a nice straight-right to his arsenal but he was not the same fighter. He looked slower, wasn't quite putting punches together, was taking flush shots (which no matter how much credit someone gives him for taking those shots, he is not supposed to be taking shots like that)...and looked disinterested...which is something Tyson even said about that bout. Not only that, but Foreman talked about that fight and how Tyson was basically "gone" as a fighter now.
Ruddock never seemed to have the ability to throw straight punches..? abit of a ****** in that sense, and fustrating to watch. If he was able to throw short punches, his fights with Mike Tyson would of been allot more competitive.
