That was great effort, and a great win, for James Buster Douglas! And I'm sure styles and emotion helped him Do I think Buster could pull that rabbit out of his hat again? Not likely, in my opinion. My money would be on Mike in a rematch.
Bump. Just rewatched Douglas-Tyson for probably the 10th time at least and it got me dreaming again about the rematch that never was.
Douglas does great for a good bit but ends up getting KTFO. I stand with the opinion that the version of Tyson that James faced was not at "good" let alone peak performance that night. Still a monstrously great win for Buster, no man will ever be able to take that win away from him- But.... 1988 Tyson > post Douglas 1990 Tyson > Douglas 89-90 > Tokyo Tyson
I agree with my late (and great) Grandfather! We saw that one in ten shot come in for Buster Douglas. I really believe Mike Tyson beats Buster the next nine times.
There are many reports that Tyson was completely unprepared for the fight with Tokyo. One of the more famous ones is the part about partying with Bobby Brown the night before the fight that Brown included in his autobiography..of course it was written many years later. But even before the fight it was said and written about: https://www.nytimes.com/1990/02/06/sports/sports-of-the-times-is-tyson-sabotaging-himself.html this article doesn't seem like an excuse, it was written 4 days before the fight and partying with Bobby. Remember Ngannou -Fury? Ngannou, like Douglas, had many features that might not suit Fury - timing, resistance to punches, size, enormous strength, strong psyche... but would a 37-year-old debutant have a chance with Fury, who took him seriously?? What if instead of Ngannou in Abu Dhabi someone at the level of Tokyo Douglas appeared? Would he expose Fury as a fake? No. Fury was not a fake. But he did not take Ngannou seriously, and Mike did not take Buster seriously. There is a ton of evidence for this and yet there are still people who think - Buster was simply better, maybe he should have been the undisputed, youngest heavyweight champion if he had been given the chance earlier answering the question in the topic - Tyson would have won faster than Lewis with Rahman 2. Even if Buster reached for all his power again like in Tokyo, which is rather unlikely considering his disposition in the fight with Holyfield.. Buster is Leon Spinks. He got to the top and that was enough for him.
Tyson in 3. He’d be better prepared and was trying to rebuild, and I remember the disappointment of how Douglas looked in his first defense against Holyfield…he’d reached the top of the mountain in Tokyo, landed a massive payday and never came close to it again. I remember the boxing magazines at the time predicting Douglas stopping Holyfield, dissecting Foreman and then lining up a Tyson rematch. No-one was expecting him to fold so quickly and then disappear from the scene.
