HBO doesn't select judges, sure, but if you don't think they have substantial influence over the sanction orgs, officials, and the sport in general - you are shockingly naive. :nod And the proof is in the pudding. Taylor was HBOs new darling, they were pushing him hard after he came out of the amateurs. And then he gets three gift decisions in a row against fighters who were not exactly popular with the boxing establishment. Hmmmm....rather suspicious, I must say. Pavlik is the first REAL middleweight he's fought since Hopkins, who had him badly rocked. Pavlik is gonna destroy HBOs hype job, and even the HBO suits won't be able to get Taylor a gift decision when he's out cold on the canvas.:yep
The doubt about JT is real. Spinks, 31% KO ratio. Ouma, 60%. Ouma loses to Roman Karmazin, who put him on the canvas, twice. Taylor, is supposed to be a big, quick MW? Cut off the ring, and move forward. Their power should not factor into the equation.
He has 4 losses, so I'm guessing somebody was able to do it (JUDAH)! 11 KO's in 40 fights and he's a middleweight contender-that's a JOKE!!!
You really shouldnt attempt to argue with people that know more than you....because AGAIN!!! You make a post ripe with insanity!!! Here let me break it apart again... So because I THOUGHT Hop won, they shouldve just reversed the judges decisions, given Bernard his title back and cancelled the rematch? Gee, didnt realize I had that much influence??? SWEET!!! While Im at it, can I get Hagler his win vs SRL please? atsch And I thought it was a draw...so what? Point is, it wasnt a bs decision...it was a close fight that went to the scorecards and came back as a draw. Would I have been up in arms if they gave it to Winky? NO! Would I have been up in arms if they gave it to Jermaine? NO! There were THAT MANY close rounds....the fight was THAT CLOSE! It was not a clinic by Wright, nor did Taylor school him....calling this fight robbery is moronic. The draw of Chavez and Whitaker is a robbery of Sweet Pea...this one couldve went either way. So was Hagler wrong for fighting Duran, Leonard & Hearns? All smaller fighters! Was Oscar wrong for taking on Floyd? Was Vazquez wrong for taking on Marquez? Or how about Tyson for taking on Holyfield? What about Tarver or taking on Hopkins? Hatton for taking on Castillo? I could go on and on all day with examples....this knock on Taylor is bull****. Fact is, Spinks and Ouma are very good fighters (you could even argue that Spinks is marginally great....former undisputed champ, wins vs Karmazin, Judah, Mayorga, etc. NOT BAD IF YA ASK ME!!). After taking on two of the top 3 or 4 fighters ALIVE in a row, the guy fights a former champion and tough SOB in Ouma as a tune up....then steps it up again vs Spinks.... I dont give a flying **** how small or how hard these guys hit....they are good fighters. Too many times, "champions" take on scrubs just to pad records and stay busy...Taylor actually stayed busy vs two former champs and two DAMN good fighters...and you blast him for it. Seriously, this is another thing thats wrong with the sport....hatred for fighters that dont deserve it. I agree with ya here. He is now fighting the most dangerous guy in the division. So lets do a recap. Joppy - Former Champ...first real test...shuts him out. Hopkins - At the time the #1 p4p fighter in the world...wins a contriversial decision in a CLOSE FIGHT. Hopkins - Read Above (but not #1 anymore...still top5). Wright - Read Above (not #1, but top5). Ouma - Fights a tune up vs a two time champion of the world...basically shuts him out... Spinks - Former undisputed champion...looks bad vs this defensive lefty who EVERYONE looks bad vs.... Pavlik - Toughest fight to be made in the division... So, I will ask you again...please name 5 fighters who have fought THAT level of competition in their last 6 or 7? (Ill give ya a hint...ya cant... ) And Ive been around the sport for about 20....so I know what an obvious bias is. When you have so many champions ducking top competition...so many champions taking easy fights, ducking true competiton, screwing the fans....and then you have one that takes tough fights everytime (and even wanted an immediate rematch after the draw vs Winky), one that even his tune ups and keep busy fights are against former champs and good fighters....and somehow you find something wrong with that? That my friend is an obvious bias. Let me clue you in on something...Hopkins is BY FAR my favorite active fighter. I believe he won the first fight. I believe the second was a draw. BUT, since he has won the title, Taylor has acted like a champion....I cant help but respect the guy. Most of these other "champions" could learn something from this man. Now as for the Pavlik fight. Pavlik is big and powerful. He is a great volume puncher....but a sloppy one (for the record, I do like Pavlik...but his footwork and defense could use some serious work). BUT, Taylor is a big middleweight also (not as big, but Pavlik doesnt dwarf him either), with a GREAT JAB....something even you guys that dont like him cant argue. And since you have been around boxing for 25+ years...ask yourself whats the best weapon vs a swarming fighter? A great jab.... Taylor wins by a clear UD!!! And then yourself, compukiller, Zakman, Amsterdam and the rest of ya will call Pavlik a hype job and say Taylor is ducking Abraham or something...:nut
so I guess whitaker should have lost most of his fights. Same with pep etc. dont be dumb, power doesnt mean everything. There are fighters that can still be good and not have power. Whitaker is an amazing fighter, pep was an amazing fighter. Think about what you're saying. Spinks is a very good defensive southpaw that is a hard fight for anyone. Sure Judah KOed him but how many rounds did it take for Judah to figure him out? And on top of that, Judah and Taylor have absolutely nothing in common. They are two totally different styles. Stop trying to discredit a man that doesnt deserve it.
So then how did Pernell Whitaker dominate for so long? You do realize people without power can be good, dont you??? -edit- Ya beat me to it boogie!!!
It's not fair to compare one of the most brilliant tacticians and defensive fighters ever to Ouma or Spinks. Like I said, both Ouma or Spinks would get starched against big, hard hitting top level MW's, but they did not against Taylor and that is telling. Ouma is especially nothing special in my opinion.
I've never done so, but the point made was specifically for Ouma, who bullies guys at 154 and is very very small at 160 with no power to even trouble a big MW and for the fact that he has no defence and is right there to be hit. It was PATHETIC for Taylor to be troubled by Ouma's pressure coming from that end when Ouma could make 147 and Taylor is basically a SMW. Also, guys like Whitaker were not featherfisted like Ouma and Spinks, they were by no means punchers, but Spinks and Ouma can't crack an eggshell and are nowhere near P4P elite fighters at that.
