You are right. Duran should have tuned up for Leonard with him before he fought Palomino. He skipped over super lightweight.
He is arguably the greatest lightweight of all time. He is a definite top tenner who would probably put up a solid argument for the #1 spot.
If he had beat Leonard again, and guys like Pryor, Benitez, Arguello. I wouldn't hesitate to put him at #1.
If duran could just have stayed away from the table after the leonard fight then i think he could have beat ray and unified the 147 crown against hearns. He then could have become a 154 champ against benitez before mounting his adaucious challenge for haglers 160 crown. I feel duran could have beat hagler if his conditioning was better, and by that i mean entering the ring as a welter. (call me crazy, but i feel many fighters who jump weights add unecessary weight thus compromising speed, flexibility and stamina.) I feel the duran of montreal could beat hagler at 160 as he would be far quicker and not tire as much over 15. (again call me crazy.) Duran should never have to go above 147,even to fight middles. In the scenario above, after duran decisions hagler he would be no1 p4p of all times without eliciting indignity from robinson fans..... However,he didnt do this and was indisciplined after montreal. It was terribly unprofessional and stupid of him to fight in new orleans against the best fighter he ever fought in less than optimal condition, ditto hearns, benitez et al.... As it is though, there is still a strong case of him as no1 p4p,based on film, resume, early career and unparalelled achievements....
