OK, waxing lyrical again... Getting back to Body and Soul, was some of that filmed in NYC? And did you know anyone else in that film besides Garfield--like Anne Revere? PS: I love what one reviewer of the movie wrote at IMDB. He wrote that this movie was the (or a) basis for Raging Bull, when the latter was based on a real person who had been boxing professionally for 6 years when Body and Soul was made.
BODY & SOUL was a thinly-veiled version of Barney Ross's hard-scrabble background, P Knew JG well 'n met Canada Lee, but no other members of the BoS cast.
Thanks, J. What did you think of the Ross biopic, This content is protected ? Mostly about his getting addicted after being wounded in WWII and kicking it. BTW, boxing movie fans, that I believe is at Netflix streaming. Probably most here would like it. It was good IMO though dated now. RE BoS, I am a big fan of Anne Revere.
My how time flies! It seems just like yesterday when Duran was a regular on CBS sports spectacular, a ferocious competitor in the prime of his life. It's hard to believe that he's now only 5 years away from being a senior citizen.
60 is usually considered the age for being a senior citizen for many things. (At least in the USA. And not counting getting retirement [SSA] in the USA, they'd like to raise that to 90.)
Just read CL's bio at Wiki. Quite a man, and lifestory! Must have been far tougher to get anywhere in those days as an AA.
So am I, J. She was script-proof. Never saw her give a poor performance. Hated ****** ON MY BACK. Like Sam Goldwyn said, "Ya wanna deliver a message, use Western Union"
Well ****** is dated like I wrote, and that was 1957. Must have been a movie first to portray H addcition, then crimes committed, then kicking it. And it seemed low budget. Though it's no Raging Bull, or BoS, I guess I liked it more than you, given the times. Glad you like Anne Revere. In addition to her acting, I admire her "life story." When called to name names at the so-called, House Un-American Activities Committee, she refused under possible penalty of jail time. I love what she said--paraphrasing--that she came from a long line of people (as in Paul Revere) who recognized and then warned the citizenry about who the real traitors and totalitarians were. Unlike "tough guys" or "liberals", like Sterling Hayden and Burl Ives, she refused to name names. Real Kihones, or is it ovaries? Anne Revere would likely now be turning over in her grave at the blatant devolution we have (tolerated) now.
When the witch hunters tried to get JG to rat-out his wife, he told' em "GO **** YOURSELF!" He was blackballed in the industry. Went from top box-office star to unemployable.
Yes, I know that well, J. I'm sure all the stress contributed to his early death at age 39. Of course, they defamed him in death too. So that movie had several heroes in fighting the real un-Americans. Garfield, Revere, Canada Lee, and the screen writer, This content is protected This content is protected But many layers involved in uncovering and revealing the reasoning for the "red scare"...
