I really dont know what would happen here. Both were excellent in their prime. I think its unfair to say this will be an easy fight for Duran. I would favor him but Duran better be mentally focused.
Duran was only beaten once at lightweight(decision) and was off his feet twice against the same person, Esteban DeJesus, whom Duran ko'd twice. Throughout his career, Chavez fought some very good fighters, but none at lightweight in the class of DeJesus. Past his prime, Duran even beat one of the greatest welters ever in Sugar Ray Leonard, outmuscling the bigger man in the process. Duran was quicker, taller, a better boxer, and a harder puncher than Chavez. You can argue that Chavez had a better chin, but that's an argument, nonetheless. Duran in a convincing decision.
[YT]Hf8ceJs4v18[/YT] Duran by TKO. Chavez takes too much punishment and ref stops the fight. Both on their best night.
I think its reasonable to suggest Chavez gets stopped late. I wouldn't expect it to happen, but it's not out of the question over 15 rounds considering the way they would fight each other and Duran's advantages, some slight and some more than that, in nearly every department. A great, competitive fight, Chavez has his moments but Duran is in control throughout most of the fight and gets the better of the action whether he wants to go on the inside or look to keep it at a distance. Both show signs of punishment at the end, Chavez would basically be a mess, but he never goes down and probably stays through to the final bell. Would have been an awesome fight.
Great post! I was just having this conversation with some guys at the gym. This is a great fight! Both have iron chins, both are fierce infighters. I think Duran is faster with his hands and feet, and more intense inside(which is where this bout would be fought) I can`t see anyone beating Duran at his game. Chavez would have some moments, and he would hang tough. But Duran is too much animal, Duran by 15rd UD.And I think people tend to underate what a slick cutie Duran could be. Great at feinting, had Palomino flinching at feints. I too see Chavez really getting banged up in this one...
De jesus was not a stand in your face fighter like JC was. He moved around the ring something JC has no idea how to do. Standing in front of Duran, one of the hardest hitters ever at 135 is suicide.
