Now to put this silly notion of Mustafa not being a serious puncher to bed atsch BIG BOOK OF BOXING SEPTEMBER 1981 RATING THE PUNCHERS THE HARDEST HITTERS IN EACH DIVISION LIGHT HEAVYWEIGHTS A toss up choice over heavy bombers Saad Muhammad and Michael Spinks. ..True punching power is somewhat clouded by his refusal to open up and deliver blows in flurries...Has been accused of being boring, lazy, over-cautious, and lacking the killer instinct...Counters by insisting "I know why i get booed. Fans want to see that toe to toe stuff. They want instant knockouts, no waiting. But as far as i'm concerned, that ain't boxing. Boxing is slip and slide; it's hit without getting hit; it's waiting for the right opportunity". Nevertheless, in addition to flaunting the skills and finesse of a classic boxer, he possesses well documented one-punch ko power...Best punch, like Saad and Spinks, is his right cross...Likes to lead with it or use it as a counter...Also delivers a debilitating left hook and uppercut, which he fires with particular effectiveness to the body...Began his professional career as a middleweight and gained the nickname "The Flame"...Lost none of his power upon moving up to light heavyweight...Repeatedly staggered Victor Galindez with overhand rights during their 1977 title fight, but foolishly slowed the fights pace and lost a disputed decision. Won the WBA title by stopping Marvin Johnson with a steady wicked body attack in March 1980...Dropped Johnson with a hook to the body and a right cross in the third round, and finished him in the 11th with a booming left hook to the chin...Toyed with Jerry Martin in a surprisingly easy title defence, chilling "The Bull" with a textbook right cross counter...Throws all his punches with perfect balance and leverage...Now looks towards the heavyweights, where his natural power will be much less effective.
Let the Arrows fly, I give a ****............................... Qawi would eat the passive and bull**** artist E.M.Muhammad alive..................... Muhammad never won a seriously BIG fight in his career............. He choked for the most part........................ Qawi choked in his fight with Spinks in '83, but Qawi beat all other ****s at 175............... Qawi was an animal at 175............ At 190, Qawi was still good, but that's where it ends................ 175 was Qawi's weight for killing.............. I never cared for E.M.Muhammad or his skills or jive............... I never saw him fight at 160, but I saw him fight a few times at 175; he was nothing overly special........ He was full of hot air, in my book......... Often pudgy, whiney and lazy in the ring............. Losses to "Galindez, Scott, Snipes & Spinks" was enough to convince me he was merely average............. NO H.O.F. vote from me ever coming............ Again, I give a **** too...........:bbb MR.BILL:hi:
You let personal preference (not half obvious, you've got pet hate names for what must be over a dozen fighters of the 80's ) blind you to the point of having no clue whatsoever. Arrows don't need to fly, you are simply so far wrong it's not even debatable. And there's some more punk, Qawi choked vs Spinks? wtf My fave is still this one tho
qawi wins. he stopped twice saad muhammad who beat eddie mustafa and did better against spinks. also gave a tough fight to evander in the first time and gave more problems to foreman than frazier did - and this was a past prime , overweight , spastic qawi. and stopped leon spinks - better than ali did. qawi simply better h2h and much better p4p.
Sorry abouth that, Johnny Boy......:yep But I have never thought E.M.Muhammad ever truly lived up to his hype as a seasoned pro... Eddie did fine as a young / green fighter moving up, but, he still hit a few roadblocks and stalled his engine in traffic on them occasions, too.... His WBA title reign was short and unimpressive...... And, inspite of several decent wins in the 1980s to keep his career alive, Eddie NEVER really rebounded or got back on track after he blew his title to Michael Spinks in 1983...... E.M.Muhammad was slick and somewhat a cutie in the 70s, but his career didn't pan out the way he had originally intended it to do so..... Eddie's reign at 175 was sandwhiched between "Foster, Galindez, Saad Muhammad, Spinks & Qawi." And after all these years, Eddie's name goes to the bottom of the list when mentioned amongst them other ex-champions......... How can you deny that, Johnny??? You CAN'T!!!! Unless, you too, have personal preferences..... Peace.... hat:yikes EXTRA: OKAY! I am NOT truly sure that Mike McCallum could or would beat Monzon at 160 if pitted and matched up in a time machine, but I do know Mike McCallum had the skills, size and finess to drive Monzon nuts..... McCallum was too big and skilled for guys like "Griffith, Napoles or Briscoe." So I can picture McCallum perhaps getting the better of Monzon....... Cheers..... :rasta MR.BILL
Kinda', YEAH!!! Both effective boxers with boring styles....... Conteh and Hill were not good for TV ratings, but they did manage to win most of the time...... As for Hill, I suppose he is worthy of the IBHOF, while John Conteh is fine with me to be inducted in some British boxing Hall of Fame...... Both guys have taken heat from one side of the pond to the other, yet, both were skilled..... hat MR.BILL
Qawi didnt "choke" against Spinks. He tried his best, but Spinks was simply better. And to call EM "average" is the most ******ed thing Ive ever heard. He certainly gave a better account vs Spinks than Qawi did, and he slaughtered Marvin Johnson in one sided fashion. Eddie had top notch talent, and skills at his best. He was just wildly inconsistent. But at his best he was FAAAARR from average.
For each his own........... Most of what Conteh fights shown on ESPN Superbouts were pretty slow-paced for the most part....... But, for Christ sake, I still give the guy credit..... Was he a favorite of mine? Hell, NO!! But he had skills........ I say the same about Virgil Hill, also......... Hill hardly ever thrilled fans with his boring ass fights in North Dakota, but the guy still had skill and ability...... Most people simply **** all over Hill cuz he stunk against a 33 year old Hearns in 1991 on PPV..... So be it.... As for getting owned, no..... Never......... I give a damn who likes who and who wants to pump up their neighbor or hometown hero....... Everybody loves somebody the other guys does not....... Me included........ I'll take warriors and truly skilled ex-champs like Bob Foster, Vic Galindez, Michael Spinks & Dwight M. Qawi as the cream of the crop at 175 pounds from 1970 to 1985, etc..... Marvin Johnson and Matt Saad Muhammad were rugged warriors with power who had little regard for defense.... Thus, they made exciting fights...... They were better and providing rather then skillfully fighting..... But they were good for ratings........ Eddie M. Muhammad was slick in his youth, but it didn't last long...... Muhammad was a hot & cold fighter who was also lazy in the ring, too...... He dropped some fights in which he needed to win...... Again, after 1981, E.M.Muhammad was fading down the ranks and into oblivion..... After his '81 title loss to Spinks, national TV gave up on him..... It was then time to turn to ESPN or lesser networks to catch a Muhammad fight..... Nuff said........ But the Eddie M. Muhammad "Nuthuggers" can feel free to post whatever they must and make Muhammad out to be Superman at 175 if they choose to do so....... I care LESS! MR.BILL:hi:
Extra, I also love to hear some of these whiney guys who post and are quick to point out that somebody doesn't know jack**** about boxing because they happen to disagree with somebodies opinion or comment....... Yeah, that's really coachable there...... Look, I understand jocksniffing and nutgrabbing cuz I'm involved with that too....... For instance, I never gave up on old Andy Golota, inspite of all his setbacks and given chances to do the right thing and make good...... Some folks you just can't but like---or dislike........ Still.?.? MR.BILL
Was Braxton's energy level low for the Spinks fight? I seem to remember Dwight using some "modern" training technics going into the Spinks fight. Which could have cost him dearly. Such as an electronic belt around his midsection, which was supposedly equivalent to 1000 push ups or something like that.
Who really knows? Qawi claims he had a cold leading up to the fight and it sapped his fire / energy, but Spinks lost his girl-friend and daughters mother in a car accident "3" weeks prior to the fight...... Also, some claim Spinks caught Qawi good early and that froze Qawi from that point owward...... I've got the fight on tape and I cannot actually see where Qawi was ever really hurt bad enough to stop fighting....... Qawi just fought timid / flat to me........ Spinks boxed effectively but way too cautiously to please the crowd..... BUT! A win is a win...... MR.BILL:bbb
