Before you say "Qawi is too big for Walker" consider this: Walker was the taller man and weighed, for arguably the greatest performance of his career, 170lbs against Jack Sharkey. In terms of size, Qawi's only real advantage is reach and that isn't going to matter. At all. Is it? Qawi from the second Muhammad fight (175lbs) v Mickey Walker from the Sharkey fight (170lbs). Who wins this carnage?
Mickey has the mobility and versatility to take this decision. Dwight had the best counter jab of his era, but Walker wouldn't be initiating a jab to counter off of, the Toy Bulldog would be leading with his hook, the ideal weapon to utilize against a Qawi. The Mick also had an excellent right uppercut we see him unload on Sharkey. Against the larger McTigue, we see Walker move back, then hammer away with counter combinations as the bigger guy moves in. We see how well he moves backwards in the pocket throughout the Hudkins rematch. Dwight was not a natural infighter. Although short, he initially used his long arms to key his jab, and had to learn to fight inside later. I think Mickey takes a competitive but clear UD, retreating, but also initiating the punching with his lead hook as he does so. The Buzzsaw would not be provided a jab to slip and counter off of, nor would he be supplied with a lead cross to roll with. This would be a frustrating and confusing match for Qawi, who would not be as effective as usual on defense while coming forward. Walker would be scoring with a lot more head shots than Dwight was used to, Mickey needed less room to unload, and he was more than comfortable boxing for the decision. The Qawi of Saad Muhammad II also was not going to match experience with the Walker of Sharkey.
I am a big fan of Qawi but he never had to face a bulldog like Mickey who could go to the body and work hard all night. I like Walker here by decision or a stop before the 15th ....Walker UD 15
I would take Qawi to win this. Naturally the bigger man, very active pressure fighter. Qawi would stop Walker.
Walker a ww cum MW cum l-hw, tough, durable, capable... Qawi a L-HW cum hw, far too strong and powerful for Walker. Qawi was 'probably' the Best littleBigman boxing has ever produced. Qawi Langford Burns Tua (?) who else for the littleBigmen.
Cant see past Qawi. I think hed be too strong for Walker. Mickey would have his moments though. Qawi on pts.
Qawi by KO He's a more skilled, bigger punching stronger version of Walker and they'd meet head on in the middle of the ring.
I think Qawi takes a decision in this one...and the pressure he would have put on Walker would have been tremendous, as well as making himself a difficult target for the Toy Bulldog. Mickey would have given him a helluva fight of course, but ultimately, Qawi grinds him down to a stump,...with The Mick hanging on at the end.
Never seen a fighter who enjoyed his work as much as Dwight Qawi...he was a ring sadist on par with Wilfredo Gomez IMO.
I just would need to see more a Walker footage. I can't discount a guy that tough w that many fights but Qwai really was a brutal, skilled monster.
