If you take away the appeals process, you increase the risk of executing an innocent person. It's not like you can reverse death. You want to be sure about these things.
USA also has the most packed jails, The FEDs give the most time then any country including Russia and South Africa. The state has stricter laws but no where near the Federal time given...dont mess with Uncle Sam
The Americans JUSTICE system shouldn't be used to carry out acts of vegence. That's what terroist do, they carry out vengence. Our system is supposed to be fair and impartial. When you inject vengence in the equation, you lose some of that fairness and impartialness.
I know what you mean by deterrent but I think it's a dumb definition that only applies if a murder victim is a mere statistic. If it deters that person from killing it's a deterrent to me. Locking someone up for life would also be okay with me, as long as the conditions are very harsh. After all it needs to be a true punishment that does JUSTICE to what they did. Part of the reason society imprisons murderers is vengeance as well, but I prefer the term justice over vengeance. You'd be surprised how much you long for that if it actually happens to you. But as long as it happens to others you can pretend it's something barbaric :good
And 2/3's of those inmates are non violent offenders. The prision population increased by something like 4000% since the war on drugs was enacted. Imprisoning too large or the general population actually has a negative effect on society. That's a different discussion though.
He was a lower level A fighter, higher level B fighter whose Power carried him. I never saw Valero as a very special fighter. I liked Valero, and I forgive him for what he did. I think it's a shame, and it's a sad week for boxing, his family, and us.
In that discussion we would probably on the same side. Taking drugs (demand causes the traffic) is a "crime" without a victim.
It's not hippie bull****, it's commons sense. The point of prision and the justice system should be to keep society safe and reduce crime. Yet crime, as a whole, never seems to go down in this country. This is an obvious problem.
Justice is subjective, and a matter of perception, to some, rehabilitation, counceling, and a new life is justice, while a life behind bars is beyond what is appropriate, to others, 15-20 years should be the maximum punishment, to others still, their life behind bars is the measures to be taken. For me, justice is a guilty murderer being put to death.... and to not do so is a sick perversion of 'justice'
It's Startrek-nerd level hippie bull**** actually. The justice system should bring justice, and part of that is punishment. An other part is rehabilitation, if necessary. Of course for murderers that should not be necessary as they should simply die in prison. Prevention of future crime is a secondary goal of the justice system.
Valero did the most cowardly act to man...I really dont call pro fighters cowards but that was just some weak **** Edwin pulled...If he was going through his share of changes...why take your own life instead of you and your wife!atsch ****ing coward!
in our minds he is a coward, but in reality he clearly had some mental illness, its not like people like that can control the way they act... Mental illness is very real so lets try not to cast stones at the man he clearly was in need of help, his wife and he have a history of domestic violence all of the signs had been visable for a long time, perhaps there are others to blame in this matter as well, those who have seen the signs and were in a position to do something but rather stood back and did nothing....
