He's in GBP's pocket, just as all of them are. HBO is just a host for GBP-promoted fights. Only from Larry and Max do we occasionally hear the truth. I loved how Bob Papa kept repeating how it was ended by the doctor due to a cut when they showed a separate camera angle where Victor clearly told the doctor to call it, not to mention the fact that it was obvious he was quitting as soon as he got up. Besides the blatant corruption, I'm a fan of Steward's fighters, but he isn't an intelligent man. He excels at one thing and it's what has made him a good trainer: he manages to get his fighters to jab a lot, something every trainer wants but few manage to succeed in influencing.
I just watched the fight again. Round 1 to maidana. 2,3,4 for ortiz for sure. 5 Ortiz was ahead but the last 10 seconds could have given it to maidana. 6 Ortiz quit. Stewart's analysis was pretty good. Stewart was correct Ortiz was winning the fight. He also said that anyone could still win. The ref didn't do Ortiz any favors by allowing all the wrestling. Post fight depression for Ortiz. He feels defeated. He'll be back. It isn't like he has other career options.
Gor some reason he's always on Calzaghe's and Hatton's nuts. I don't know wht this is strange to me. I guess I always just expect 'the brother's' to go with blood.
The LACK of depression was the problem here. He wasn't sad, he was resolute, sober, and honestly, quite content with his loss. He's done. Enormously likable guy, but he isn't a fighter. The good thing is, he knows that, and I have to give him some respect for that.
True, Steward does sasy the phrase "This is exactly how I thought it would go" (thats paraphrasing of course), but people on this board ignore what he says BEFORE that. He often does early on in fights predict how the fight will turn out. Often early in fights when the fight is for the most part even, he picks up on minute differences in each fighter's game that give us insight on how the fight will develop. I see people on ESB bitching about him a lot, simply for the fact that he does often say something along the lines of "This is exactly how I thought the fight would turn out.", but ****, its TRUE. And if you bothered to pay attention to EVERYTHING he says.. you'd notice that before he says THAT, he usually is spot on with his analysis of whats going on, and what will probably happen later on in the fight. To me this is just yet another thing that certain people on this board like to ***** about, and will continue to ***** about, regardless of what really happens. They get too hung up on things like.. in the Cotto-Clottey fight, Steward continually said that Clottey seemed sharper. And then Cotto got the decision.. well, Clottey WAS sharper, and if the judging had been better, and he hadn't given away rounds toward the end SHOULD have won the fight. In fact, theres a good argument for him having really won it regardless of giving up rounds and judging. Steward is a great trainer. and a good commentator. Does he make mistakes? Sure. His fighters don't always win when they follow his game plan - but its boxing, though it may be a very scientific sport, crazy **** can always happen.
Elaborate, back up your claims with some facts. In GBP's "pocket"? I assume you're implying that he falsley says GBP fighters are doing better than they're really doing, and overhypes their abilities... How can this be true, when MOST OF THE TIME, his predictions are spot on. And regardless of predictions, his analysis of simply whats going on during the fight, not just what might 'appear to go on' to the casual viewer or unschooled fan, is VERY accurate. He notices things that the average fan would never realize or understand even if they could watch the fight over and over again - and Steward picks up on them right away as they're happening. For almost anyone on this board to say they know better than Steward about how to analyze a fight, is ridiculous.
Have to emphatically disagree with you on this one, Manny is a poor trainer at the most... anybody can have a better rec. than him just by going with statistical chances..........at least as of lately (the last dozen yrs.):hey
I see him work 3 times a year during camp..while he has slowed (he is 65) he is great at breaking down a boxer via video, developing a fight plan and getting his fighter mentally ready. He is brilliant in the ring
