I don’t think Josesito is bad at all. I just think, at this point, Ennis needs to look to fight someone whose more than that.
I would be OK with Joseito (can't argue it's not likely to produce a big finish) . Josesito is not far from the exit at aged 36. This fight could definitely be made, IMO. Definitely, though, there are better fights to be made for Ennis. Some thoughts: Keith Thurman. I think Keith is kidding himself if he thinks he's getting Crawford or Errol Spence Jr. Keith would want quite a lot of money for this, though, as he's probably taking an L he can't afford. Shawn Porter. The ultimate spoiler. Maybe if the negotiations for Crawford don't work out? Shawn is a short fighter - but can bully just about anybody in the division. Andre Berto. Supposedly on Thurman's list, too. Says he will only take fights with substantial paydays. Undersized. Had very good power. Hasn't fought for 2 1/2 years and is long in the tooth. Unclear if he can be any real obstacle for Jaron. Devon Alexander. Also getting near the end. Needs something big to re-establish himself for one more big payday...because that shock KO loss in his last fight really set him back. Maurice Hooker. Also needing to regroup after a KO loss. One of the rare welters who would have height and reach on Jaron. My gut says Thurman won't take the risk and that Shawn Porter will be otherwise occupied. Wouldn't be surprised if Berto and Thurman end up fighting each other...so I'm leaning towards Josesite, Hooker or Alexander.
Lopez is not better than Lipinets...............at all, and I'd personally pick Lipinets vs. Lopez. Ennis/Lopez would be a step backwards (as far as progression). So any potential fight would simply be a stay busy/active fight, which is fine. But let's not act like it would be another step up, it's not even really a lateral move. Ennis and Vergil are both steadily heading to the top 10 of the division (Ortiz is already there).
Agreed that Lopez is no step up. And with his style he'd be in big trouble against a really-good counterpuncher like Lipinets. Lopez is entertaining, though. And has good experience (made Thurman look bad, IMO). Jaron's father seems amenable to an Ortiz matchup. Ortiz Jr seems very young but you have to figure that his very high energy style won't be possible by aged ~30. He's working a shorter timeframe for this career than Ennis is because his prime is almost certain to be shorter.
Something else to keep in mind regarding fight-making for Jaron Ennis... His promoter is Cameron Dunkin and that man has a lot of unhappy history with famous fighters that contributed to a lot of potentially-great fights not happening. That being the case - it's going to be really hard to hook a meaningful opponent who isn't bound to Showtime.
No way, I hope it’s Qudratillo (now with PBC) in an eliminator... You could say he hasn’t earned it but plenty of guys with records less gaudy than his have gotten straight up title shots. What I see happening is Spence vacating and moving up in 2022, putting Ennis and Ortiz on a collision course for his belts... Alpha orgs and PBC/GBP will probably finagle it so each guy gets a piece of the title so they can “marinate” for years and further strangle the sport.
I think Spence has kind of given up on a "career-defining" fight at 147 (and, no, Kell Brook wasn't it). There are no boogeymen operating at 154 right now - so it's not really apparent what he can do there. At this moment (subject to change) that's even kind of true at 160 lbs, as GGG is over-the-hill and Canelo is off hunting glory at 168 lbs. I'm reasonably-sure Spence Jr is competitive to win belts in both divisions - but being a 3 division champion is not, IMO, really as cool as having that epic, career-defining fight.
Ennis needs a name like porter, thurman, or danny g. They would prob duck him like they been ducking crawford though.
Lopez is top notch for a guy who comes from the mid 2000s era and is still active with a name that can draw. He still has the goods and is a great contender. You guys are hard to please sometimes. He stood up to ****ing Canelo and took a beating from arguably a light heavyweight weight after destroying Victim Ortiz whose biggest win was Andre Berto to who is on BeantownAll's list. Lopez has a good career and veteran skill set for Ennis to test himself against. Rocky might knock this dude out and Cinderella Man himself into title contention again.
