If they don't there won't be any stars. That's what they are supposed to do if they want things to keep running and sometimes they might overhype on purpose to keep the attention, whether negative or not they don't care as long as people tune in.

I don't see why any real fan of this sport would be bothered that HBO hype up future boxers even if you don't like them, it's still good for the sport to see more stars shine.

How about the guys who would probably never be on TV if HBO wasn't supporting them???

    Chad Dawson
    Sergio Martinez
    Paul Williams
    Andre Berto

Not to mention that plenty of the stars they've built have turned out to be legit (Mayweather, Cotto, Hoya, Holyfield, etc. etc.) I'm not saying all these guys are great, but at least HBO putting up the money puts some good fighters without huge fanbases on TV.

HBO never supported Martinez, he and his very fan friendly style was there for years, he became Oscar's mando in that period, yet for a very long time he couldn't get on any major network. Then he got a chance vs. Bunema whom he absolutely tashed and became a good "opponent" for HBO regulars such as Cintron, Williams and Pavlik. He had to beat the lineal world champion at a higher division to get proper credit and he still doesn't even has his own HBO date.

Dawson is a different story, HBO bought him out of Showtime for ridiculous money, Williams got televised from the moment he stepped up and Berto is an HBO grown fighter. They are HBO supported all right, to the point of getting backed by commentators in undeserved decisions.

That's what hbo is supposed to do. Granted sometimes it's a bit overkill,b ut it's a business. You have to have stars. As far as some of the decisions we see, you have to blame the judges. Even if hbo pays or pressures them to score a fight a certain way, it's up to the judges. You can't put it all on hbo.

What? You mean like pushing Chris Arreola on us while ignoring the actual heavyweight champions?
