Just out of curiosity did the methodology involve taking past writers' and commentators' lists and averaging them? If so, wouldnt more modern fighters be handicapped as many of these lists would have been written before their careers?
I'll just tell you this, I'm regularly in contact with people who are well ahead of the curve in picking current fights, betting real money, and their lists NEVER look anything like that. Ever. Yep. Greatest is so ambiguous that a lot can be read into it. Put a gun to my head and I could put forth a good argument that Jeffries was the greatest heavy ever. When we start identifying specific criteria which we think defines greatness, then it gets a bit dicier. The argument is more about what constitutes greatness than the individual fighters.
The best or ideal height for a boxer at hw would be 6'3 and below and 5'10 and above. weighing between 190-218 pounds. The ideal fighter would be 6'0 tall with a decent reach and weigh no more than 200 pounds. Basically a prime jack johnson, who'd make you miss all night with his superior skill. If Roy Jones can beat Jon Ruiz a 230 pound good champion in the 90s weighing 190 pounds. What do you think a 210 pound Jack Johnson would do to a 240 pound glasshammer of Wlad? or a 215 pound liston? The debate is stupid. If any fighter around today can beat Wlad it is jonathan banks, who is ironically a cruiserweight. The toughest guys have never been the tall ones. Historically it is the small guys who cover up well and move in a generally evasive manner or get in on the inside. When the tall guy is looking to jab you the small guy is trying to nail you with hooks and overhand shots.
