Yeah, I think we've seen the gamut of possibilities in these situations - impossible to predict. Totally depends on the individual (and the match-up).

Gomez looks pretty focused though to be fair.

    Round 2

Gómez is ducking and weaving in mid-crouch, easily dodging all of Sakai's forward-leaning downward-reaching hooking volleys. Gómez is countering smoothly with a 1-2-3 from below and doubling or tripling up his jab as he steps to Sakai, forcing him to freeze up and put a cork in his lumbering pressure. Sakai hulks over Gómez, guard bunched up high, until Gómez darts in with those jabs & combos, then he is ceding ground and winging body shots, missing badly on the backfoot.

    10-9 Gómez

    20-18 Gómez

I was a devout fan of the original. I bailed when the US version debuted. Sakai was a beast and the best, Michiba second, Kenichi, third and Morimoto fourth.

I refuse to believe it I've never met a Japanese Mexican in all my time on this planet. There are no Japanese Mexicans, Japanese Poles, or Japanese Irishmen. Fact

I hate Baseball and Basketball with a burning passion, I find it torturous, and only become a fan of Football just in time for the Super Bowl.

    Round 3

Gómez is dancing around, drawing the lead from Sakai, easily slipping and countering while still floating laterally. Sakai tries catching some of Gómez's jabs on his right palm, sort of nudging out with it with his fingers uncurled to form a mitt, but his plan to catch Gómez with a hook after swallowing up his jab never comes to fruition. Gómez is too quick and his footwork too fluid & mercurial for the more robotic Sakai.

    10-9 Gómez

Soccer and cycling are your pleasures outside boxing, IIRC?

(further proof you're soulmates with Maravilla :sisi1)

The only guy that was worth a damn on the US version is Mario Batali, who I loved on his show Mario Eats Italy, it fit him perfectly, the Iron Chef format, not so much.

    Round 4

Gómez is lighting up Sakai with counters while shuffling in front of him, dragging in the lead foot an inch or two and then snapping upright with a 1-1-1-2 and falling away into a crouch again with his feet already peeling swiftly along the canvas, leaving Sakai churning air. Gómez is just luring Sakai into trap after trap, baiting with the jab and then putting in 3- and 4-pieces before getting low and getting the hell outta Dodge. Nice snap-pivots by Gómez, never letting Sakai land flush with so much as one probing jab, let alone his meandering roundabout power shots.

    10-9 Gómez

    40-36 Gómez

The only other sport I'm a devout follower of is cycling, soccer I'm a casual fan at best. Yeah, that definitely heavily contributed to my unwavering devotion to Maravilla.
